So I'm looking at buying a replacement gas tank for my 64 newport (c-body). The question I have is, I am also going to replace the sending unit but, do I buy the sending unit for the new gas tank or the original sending unit for my newport.

I measured my tank at about 35 inches long, 25.5 inches wide, and about 8.5 inches tall on the taller side. I figured these are pretty close in size and shouldn't have a problem fitting either one.

this one is slightly smaller for a 62-63 b-body $155 15 gallon

dimensions 33-5/16 x 27-5/16 x 8-1/4

this one is for 67-68 dodge coronet $116 19gallon

dimensions 37-3/8 x 24-1/8 x 8

and here is my rusted out tank

thoughts?

I'd say look into getting your tank repaired,it doesn't look that bad.If your not getting the exact replacement tank you may be in for more headaches in the long run.It may not mount in your stock location properly and a tank full of gas is not something you want rubbing against something and causing friction.Another issue would be the angle of the fuel filler neck may be different.Check into shops that repair radiators, they usually repair fuel tanks as well.Good luck!

Can't remeber the company but I bought one on ebay. Was super cheap with sending unit and straps. Fit perfect.

There are several quarter sized holes on the other side. Yes I said quarter size. Ha.

is there a tool needed to remove the old sending unit from my tank? I tried turning it with a pair of pliers...was unsuccessful...

Try spraying some penetrationg oil on top and let it sit for a while. It may just be the original sending unit was never removed and has rusted itself to the tank.

There is a spicific tool for that ........ But I have always used a hammer and a teflon drift.

Same here but I never had a teflon drift or a teflon anything but have used a 1" x 1" or 1" wooden dowl and hammer or hammer handle. Something that won't cause a spark to knock it around

Please let us know if you find the source. I have been looking for a gas tank for my 1965 Newport for years. The original was torn in an accident and the replacement wasn't perfect and the dented part later pinched and leaked (fixed, but not great). The only ones I see on ebay are ~$250.

I also use a hammer and rod. The tool would be nice if replacing the sender w/ tank on the car. If like A-body cars, the lock ring that comes with the new sender is slightly too thin to seal well. Most either re-use their old lock ring or use 2 rubber gaskets.

took out the sending unit, looks like its trashed.

regardless if I get a different tank, I need to get the sending unit for that specific tank, right?

Yes,get one for that specific tank but try getting it in the same Ohm range as your current one that way your gage will read correctly.

that's kind of the reason why I would want to get the sending unit for my newport even if the tank is slightly different...

stock replacement http://ecat.spectrapremium.com/prod/All/FG143A ohm rating 10 to 70 ohms

and the possible replacements are 10 to 80 ohms

any issues in the 10 ohm difference?

I don't think the difference would be major,if any. Maybe your needle may be off slightly. You could always check with someone who specifically deals with gas tanks for the correct answer as they would know best.

stupid question perhaps but: does it matter if the sending unit is 3/8 or 5/16 outlet? I mean its pretty close right?
