My Achilles heel admittedly is camshaft selection.

The specs of this particular engine are a 73 440 truck block, 452 heads, standard bore. Craptastic compression (8.2:1?)

I just want to get it running, and healthy. It's a temporary engine at best...

I've toyed with the idea of something along the lines of the 70 440HP cam with .268/.284 specs.

That is probably the cam it was born with. That advertised 8.2:1 compression ratio is in reality about 7.8:1.

The best bang for the buck here for a just get it running project is a new double roller multi keyway timing set and a cam timing degree wheel. Watch some YouTube videos on degreeing in a camshaft and advance the one that's in it 4 degrees.

I would go with the first cam Stubbs posted, the second one wants more compression then you have. Or just go with what Twostick said and advance the stock one.

If it was me I'd use a comp cams 268 high energy cam. Its .454 intake/.454 exhaust. Makes power from 1500-5500 rpm. Lots of torque. That's what I'm using in my 440. Very happy with it.

I like the 268H as a budget cam in a 383. I suppose many like it in a 440.
We've never had good luck with that bigger summit cam, but some have

Nick, you drove the BoaB and she has the 268 cam in her.
Just to give you an idea...lol

The (High Energy) 268H is not the same as the (Extreme Energy) XE268H. I thought you had the XE268H Leaburn? That's what I have in my Windsor. My brother has the 268H in the 440 in his New Yorker.
Mine is the H.
Mike you drove it too so you know it works very well. LOL

Cylinder pressure is what.you do not have with your combo. Low pressure makes them feel lazy, which is why smog engines get a bad rep. Is that measured number or going by wish books/FSM for compression ratio. Without actually measuring it's all a guess, and probably lower, in which case advancing the stocker you listed probably best.

I appreciate the input, as I said, it's a temporary engine, as eventually it and the 727 behind it will be replaced with a 500 stroker and A833, I'm just tired of pushing cars around.

I have this 440 sitting here fresh with everything but a cam and lifters.

Mike is your Windsor a 383 car?

I ask as I have that 383 I bought off Murray to put together for my sport fury.

My Windsor was originally a 383 car, but it is now a 451 stroker. I rebuilt the original 383 from my Windsor and put it in my Newport convertible.

The engine that I pulled from my Newport was also a 383. That block was stamped 1971 and also had "E" for exterrnal balancing / cast crankshaft. I kept the heads and gave the shortblock to the same guy that Murray bought his 300 from. However I'm sure that the 383 that you bought from Murray did not previously belong to me.

Ahhh okay. Yeah you're right about this 383 being different from the one you gave to that gentleman, as this one's a 66.

It's going to get a good going over and the 268H. I was able to find a 69 dated 4 barrel intake and a 187 pan, just need to find a waterpump housing for it.
