I have I believe a 1965 Mopar 4-speed transmission (23 spline). It moves freely. Selling as a core.

ya that way they are not liable if the tranny needs work,therefore it is a core!
 
Would I be correct in saying that the position of the shifter mount on the tail shaft housing would suit B and C body ?
 
Yes it is.
And look at that flange at the output of the tailshaft.
That is for a ball and reunion.
So your driveshaft has to be a '65.
 
On a manual trans if it moves it's probably good otherwise you take the cover off and just visually inspect the gear teeth
