Hi Everyone,

Happy Easter. I’m trying to help my stepdad with why his transmission doesn’t want to work in his ‘67 Fury wagon before he sends it off to have it looked at and fixed. He recently swapped a 440 and 727 in the car and the engine runs fine but the car doesn’t want to move when its put in gear. And let me clarify thats any gear whether its reverse or drive. My stepdad put fluid in it and it showed overfull on the dipstick, but the car still won’t move. Him and his friend think its the pump even though it has fluid in the converter, and he thinks that the transmission will have to get rebuilt. Does anyone have any ideas of what it could possibly be before we have that done?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

First thing that comes to mind is the convertor not being seated properly in the transmission pump.

Does the transmission have an unknown history? They usually don't fail completely.

What Big John said.

If the converter was not seated the transmission typically will not mate to the engine without forcing it on with the bolts. When you do this it usually breaks the tabs on the pump gear. Do you know if the transmission went on hard?

Happy Easter!

Let’s go to the basics first. Was the fluid checked with the engine running and in neutral?

One quick way to see if the pump is moving fluid. Disconnect one of the cooling lines and strat the engine in neutral. If fluid flows out it is pumping something.

Thanks for checking in but sadly no, not yet.

Check the fluid flow from that cooling line! A rebuilt tranny with a PROPERLY rebuilt pump should spurt the fluid from the cooling line nice and steady. I suspect yours won't, esp seeing how badly that pump shaft is marred, YET THEY USED IT ON THE REBUILD! Pity the perpetrators of that couldn't have a "rebuild" put on their bodies of comparable Kwollitee.

Is the 400 an internally or externally balanced motor.
Would it use a different flex plate and or torque converter than the 440?
Probably wouldn't explain no go, but if it don't balance, that would be why.

“Update”, although not much of one:

I asked my stepdad whether he did or was going to do that trick you recommended with the cooling line @MONC440, and he says “i’m done with it”. So he did not do it :BangHead:, he says his friend is going to come get the car on either Sunday or Monday to bring it to his shop and yank out the transmission there because he has a lift and we don’t. Sorry for the news, but I will keep you all updated with what happens.
