I replaced my very rusty original trunk deck lid with one in much better shape. After getting it painted and installed, I find that it will not stay in the raised position by itself like my old one did. The torsion bar is in the middle hole on both sides, which is the same position it was in with the old deck lid. I am hesitant to move the bar to the next hole as it might damage the lid. The bars are hard to move, as they are under a lot of tension. I bolted the replacement on in the same position as the old one. I assume all deck lids in 1967 (4 door, 2 door, convertible, Crown, Le Baron) are the same. I also assume I received a 1967 deck lid, but maybe I was sent a 1968. Are 1967 and 1968 deck lids the same? Any thoughts as to what might be the problem? Thanks!

I’m not aware of a difference between ‘67 and ‘68 lids.
Stopped staying up on its own over the last few years and I did adjust the rods to provide more tension and it stays up perfectly now. Maybe your old one was lighter from all of the missing metal.

I'm presuming you "Bondo checked" the replacement decklid?

Was your rod in the middle hole and you moved in the direction to the back of the car to the third hole? If so, what method did you use to move the rod? Thanks!

I went from the forward most slot to the middle.

The 67/68 trunk lids are interchangeable 2 dr, 4dr, vert and between the 2 years...no differences in them.

I think these are the Achilles heel of this design for rot. I have seen many a 67/68 Imperial that were overall rot free, except for the trunk lid...my 68 convertible included... the corners were just gone on mine and I was lucky to find a rot free replacement.

I have one available. Imagine how nice it was when I put it outside years ago? ( under cover)

Have you ever had to place the torsion bar in the third hole so the deck lid would stay up? I am concerned if I place it in the third hole I might damage something.

Bondo does not weigh what you think. In fact, finished bondo might weigh 6 oz if spread across half the deck lid.
I have never had a problem moving the trunk springs. Maybe the hinge pivot is sticky. While the torsion bar is off, check it.
As long as the slider block is lubed, you should have no risk bowing the decklid while pushing down.

I don't know about these but on other Chrysler products they started NOT punching out the areas in the inner trunk lid panel. I know on the 67 A-Bodies the panel was cut out, in 68 they were not, this if the case may make a difference in weight.

In my 40+ Mopar years I just learned of this a year ago or so.

The 3 slots are intentional, use whichever one you need to and if the lid still doesn’t stay up then my guess is the bars themselves have lost their spring.

No, it was a straight swap on mine, no changes to slots and everything works as it should...sorry.
