1967 newport trans

Drain the torque converter for Sure!!! Get that nasty fluid out of there! Do you know how to do it? It’s easy and very necessary. I can explain it if you need instructions.

WOW that fluid doesn’t look good at all. The trans might work better, but it might fail pretty soon also. Doesn’t hurt to try. The gaskets will do that when old, I've seen it before.

The chunks of material are debris from failing clutch packs. It will not hurt anything to service this transmission, but it is probably not long for this world.

Well after a new filter and topping the fluids off, she started working. We took her for a short spin, less than a 1/4 mile as the brakes don't work. We live on a red nd road and kept the speed below 15mph with the parking brake. When we got back there was a leak that we traced to the "shift rod seal", not sure the proper name at this point.? So I assume the tans would have to come out for repair. So probably going to just pull the engine and trans as a unit so we can get the engine out for a refresh as it seems to have a few leaks from the valve bodies.

That seal can be replaced in the car. Takes a bit of time. And the trans is likely near the end anyway.

The leak on the shift selector is a very common one. This can be repaired with the transmission in the car and there is an inexpensive tool to remove the old seal. There are several posts by member MBar regarding this operation. Search posts: Trans seal by MBar.

Can his way do it without removing the valve body? That would be nice. I was doing it removing the valve body which is time consuming.

Yes, that is the whole point of the special tool, big time saver.

This is great information! Will save some time doing this job.

That looks ugly!!! Not a good sign and is likely an indication you require a full rebuild. I guess it wouldn’t hurt trying a new filter but even if it did work it likely wouldn’t last. My recommendation is save your money and do the rebuild now. As for the gasket that is the way some of them are.

At this point I am thinking for just pulling the engine and trans to get the trans rebuilt. While I have the engine out clean it and fix any leaks. The radiator has a hole on the bottom of it so I need to pull that as well to be able close the hole. A brake line that runs under the radiator needs to be repaired/replaced. And the steering box needs attention. So i figure just pull everything and get to work.
