440 block i.d

The highest number I have for the 440 V8 is 3698830, 1973-1978

This 440 engine has casting number 3860930.

A better source for determining the model year is the engine number stamped on the passenger side, rear of block, just above the oil pan flange. The number will be at least 14 digits in length. The first letter will give you the model year. The partial VIN for the vehicle that used the engine was stamped on the right side of the block below cylinder #8. There is also a short engine number, top of block, directly in front of intake manifold valley pan, next to distributor base, for the 440.

The problem with the casting number is that it just tells you when the block was cast. Tells you nothing about the model year.

Also, the part numbers / casting numbers have absolutely no relation to the model year. The part numbers started back in the 1920's and were assigned in numerical order. Thus if a grille for a 1960 Valiant was assigned part number 2020 112, the next person up is assigning a part number for a 1962 318 V8 valve cover, the valve cover would be assigned 2020 113. By 1972 the highest number in the original run of numbers reached 3780 202. Then there was the 6000 000 series of numbers started in 1957. By 1972 6092 272. And the sequence that started at 9000 001 reached 9432 699 for 1972. Back in the 1930's Chrysler blocked off numbers in the 500 000's for Dodge Truck parts.

And part numbers that were cancelled were not reused. Thus you will find blocks of numbers missing. (Missing numbers can also include numbers assigned to trucks, engines, and a large number of items styling and engineering staff worked on.)

Designers had worked on a facelift for the 1962 DeSoto and had part numbers assigned for the new parts. When the word came down that the DeSoto would be dropped, all the parts assigned to the 1962 DeSoto were crossed off and cancelled. And never assigned again.
