I know the factory color was silver and then changed to black mid-year. I was just thinking how body color would look, like the Newport, and wondering if anybody knows of any examples they could point out

The reason for the different and specific colors on that panel of the 300s was to be distinctive rather than a mundane "body color" panel, as other Chryslers could have.
Why not do something different? Some body wrap material in darker gray carbon fiber pattern? OR a black metallic wrap material. OR "engine turned" silver, but Chevy used that in the earlier 1960s!
"Wrap material"? Many options that can be changed easily if desired. No issues with "paints", either!

Well, I already have the aluminum metallic paint that someone here recommended (maybe it was even you lol) but since I'm painting the car I was also pondering just painting it body color, which in this case is turbine bronze. Wrap and all that is too adventurous for me

Was this the same as the argent used on wheels in this time period?
I think it was pretty much the same color as you'd find on your New Yorker on the panel under the headlights and tailights.

The 300 was the " sporty" trim level.
With the exclusive tail lights on the 68 300, the black or argent silver made them stand out.
I almost blackened my tail panel on my Turbine Bronze 68 Newport Custom.
At the last minute I left it alone.

Dang, the '68 Four door hardtop 300 looks SO much better than the two door!
One difference between the Newport, New Yorker, and the 300 is the size of the tail light assemblies. With the New Yorker, there's very little of the panel actually exposed, so whatever color it is, tends to highlight the tail lights. Whereas with the Newport it's the other way around. I definitely think the Newport would not look good with that panel being silver. I think even black would be overbearing. I think body color works. The 300 tail light assembly falls in the middle as far as size, but is more similar to the Newport.
I may go with body color just to see how it looks. I can always repaint it if it really does not look good.

I have to admit that this is the most handsome looking 68 Newport (or any for that matter) 4 door I have ever seen. Wow - just Wow!! And I agree regarding the rear panel color. The Chrysler folks were right on this call: definitely body color.

I owned a French Ivory 68 300 that had the black rear panel. I thought it looked “right” although I believe that it hinges on the body color of the car frankly.
I never realized that Chrysler changed the color mid year.

My burgundy 68 300, the one in that street side classic photo, came with silver panel, I repainted it black. The one I have now came black. I think black is my color of choice. We had 3 others over the years, dark blue with black panel light yellow which came with silver panel and a gold with black panel. I think it boils down to personal choice, I have also seen flat black and gloss black.
My Dad's '68, that he bought late in the model year (the '69s were out in back of the dealership) had a black rear and was this shade of green.

I do favor the black panel. I don’t know if there is any rhyme or reason as to what color is chosen at the factory. Whatever’s handy I guess!

Silver does go good on that green.
I've heard they changed it from silver to black mid-year because reflection off the silver bothered people following from behind. (Which seems pretty silly imo)
