I have a 69 300 vert w/ a 440 and 727. After warming up the engine would really struggle to idle at stops while in drive. It would also stutter and surge when i really put my foot down. I fixed a vacuum leak and it helped. I then checked timing and I was at 19 degrees advanced for TDC. My manual said specs for timing were 7.5* before TDC so I retarded the timing and the rough idle and sluggish acceleration are gone.

Anybody have any thoughts on the timing i mentioned above? would being too advanced cause those symptoms?

What is the curb idle recommendation for a 69 440? i am at 650 rpm currently.

Also I was gonna use a vaccuum gauge and set my carb mixture what are you all typically getting at the manifold? 20-21?

Thanks again for any help this site is great.

To me, 19 deg seems way too far advanced and could create all sorts of issues. I have my 68 440ci set up at 12 deg. but I'm also at a higher elevation. I'd say right around 10 deg. is ideal. Make sure your vacuum advance is pulled and plugged. I set up my idle by judgement only. I'm no mechanic, but while in park, find a good idle that's not too crazy in either direction, slightly on the higher side, put it in gear and if it's still idling at a reasonable rpm. you're good to go! HAHA! Some can call me nuts, but alot can be done by feel alone. I'm sure some of the guys on here can answer your questions in more detail! Enjoy your car!
