69 Plymouth Fury III Convertible Help!

Hello,

I just purchased this project! 1969 Plymouth Fury III convertible 318. Engine is running pretty good, brakes are good but the brake pedal keeps sticking, needs new top, front bumper, tires, fuel tank and paint job for starters. Oh and new quarter panels which are near impossible to find!

I am starting with the tank and need some help. I found the C-body tanks online but need to make sure I get the right amount of vents. There are two vent pipes coming down from the back of the trunk area. One has kind of a J shape and leads to no where. The other goes up into the trunk and loops back down and I have no idea where it ends up, it looks like it just runs into the body.

I guess my question is how many vents do I need and where are these vent pipes supposed to end up?

I noticed the same thing on my `67 Imperial, one of those goes right into the frame rail! I found no real explaination for them in the service manual either.

No, I have owned three 1970 polara convertibles, 1 69 Sport Fury convertible and I once bought a 1969 satellite convertible with a slant six. I never drove that one. Had it for a week then the Fury became available. I quickly sold the satellite

I don't know why a 1969 would have so many tubes around the gas tank. Is this originally a CA car? The fuel hose going into the trunk looks scary, but maybe it was just for vapors and they put a charcoal canister there. Still, I wouldn't want even vapors inside the passenger compartment. Unless you are in a state where they inspect everything, I would just plumb it as an older C. My 65 Newport has just a fill tube with no vent tube (like A bodies have) and requires a vented cap. Originally, there is just a single 5/16" tube from the sender, though I added a return tube for my external electric EFI fuel pump.

Before you replace the master cylinder, verify that your booster is OK since a torn diaphragm is a common problem. Rebuilding the booster is $$. You might fit a booster and MC from a later car. I put one from a 99 Breeze on my 65 Dart, but a little easier to fit since A bodies use stand-off brackets. You should already have 2 brakes lines from the MC in 1969. A replacement MC should have the same piston bore as your current one to work identical, but not essential. A smaller bore will give less pedal effort but more travel.

Does your gas filler happen to be hidden behind the back license Plate? I am waiting on my new tank but have no idea how the filler will look. There wasn't a tank on the car. I see there is a pretty big gap between the bumper and tank and I am wondering how you fit a modern day gas pump in there to fill her up. If you have a photo of this that would help!

I don't have a pic but you are right the filler neck goes to the back of the rear plate. If memory serves there's a bracket on the filler neck that screws into the valance. I got a replacement grommet for mine on Ebay. How do you fill it? Definitely a fine art. Bend down and listen very carefully lol.

That almost sounds like looking in the barrel to see if the gun is loaded.LOL. Welcome to the site sounds like you have California car/tank if you are missing the vents in the car I would just get it without them I.e. the rest of the us and Canada cars.

I had two vent tubes on my 69 Sport Fury Vert, 1 went down to and mounted on the frame rail above rear axial, The other went up into the trunk near where the roof top motor was and dead ended off to the passenger side quarter panel above the wheel well area.

Also good luck finding rear quarter panels that are any good or even half way decent. I ended up getting a pair off of a 1970 wrecked rust free Sport Fury from North Dakota with the trunk floor panel,
