If it's like my '70, and I think it is. it's a mercury switch in the socket.

A mercury switch works on position. A blob of mercury rolls back and forth and covers the contacts when you open the trunk.

There are two different trunk lights. One used the plunger switch that generally mounts by the left hinge, the other is a mercury switch in the light socket.

thanks, that never even occurred to me !

If you have a mercury switch, DO check its operation after plugging it back in. That might be why it was unplugged in the first place. If the light stays on, it can drain the battery.

Happy Holidays!
