I was looking to see if I could find anything to put on raw steel to prevent the rust from coming or coming back. I found that everyone said if you applied clear coat by itself, the rust will come back. I was doing an internet search and came across this product with some positive reviews. The name is Adhereto http://www.houseofkolor.com/products/specialty.jsp It is meant to be applied first and then a clear coat or top coat applied second.

Are you looking to permanently protect bare metal long term?

Check out this site, it is similar to POR-15 but has a big range of products and has a tough clear coat that can be directly applied to anything. http://www.kbs-coatings.com/ It is UV stable too.

Thanks for the tip. I have used the pro 15 equivalent. I was just looking for something I could spray on, not happy with the brushed on por-15 look and finish for anywhere but my undercarriage and engine block.

I've had great success with Eastwoods version and it come rattlecan.

Painting it on with a brush is an option, I use the clear coat they have for topcoat on my car using a spray gun, once dried properly it is impervious to brake fluid and thinners, battery acid etc, perfect for an engine bay too because of this. If you are looking for a rattle can of clear that will seal stainless steel or whatever else, try looking at Eastwood Diamond Clear, I have a can of this for small jobs but havent tried it yet, but they claim its pretty good.

Nice that sounds exactly what I am looking for. I didn't look to see that you could spray it too. Thanks once again that sounds perfect.:occasion14:

A word of caution....which ever product you select be sure you can lay it down smooth. Brush on products work great but can leave product build up in the form of brush lines. When you are ready to proceed to the next phase of restoration you will need to sand these 'imperfections' flat. The process that will get you the best results and reduce future prep work will be to spray the product on, preferably with an hvlp. The reason I suggest hvlp over rattle can is the wide spray pattern, minimal risk of spatter and consistency of the product for large surfaces.

just my .02

Yes I agree 100% I have a couple of HVLP guns and that is how I want to apply the product. No more brushes for me, I always would end sanding it all off and starting over.
