i replaced a fuel pump in a 1973 new yorker with a 440 the other day and the weather finally broke to put everything back together . well i must doing something wrong? start car , belt slide around the pulley of the alternator.. like the pulley is froze up.maybe belt too tight , not tight enough, but spins with no belt on ......i'm stumped

You may have put the clamp bolt in the wrong hole in the alternator. It "bottoms out" on the mount slot and you think you are pulling the belt tight but you really aren't.
