UGH!

Okay. Upon taking off the steering wheel the other day - it looked to rain confetti with metal shavings!

I was also upset to realize that while removing the steering wheel, the threads on the retaining nut have been completely stripped, and the face of the shaft stripped, not allowing me to seat anything on it. (Before anyone says it; yes I may have hit the shaft with a hammer a few times before using a puller :()

Does anyone know the nut size for the retaining nut? And would it be better to just try and salvage another shaft or use a tap and die?

A die or thread file, plus a flat file to kill the mushroom... as long as the shaft hasn't broken loose, you need to get a nut. Shouldn't be too difficult.

Search eBay or place a want ad here for another nut. They are a short locking nut with a fine thread and finding a hardware substitute might be tough.

Use a thread file to fix up the threads. They are a good piece to have in your toolbox anyway. You can estimate the threads per inch with a ruler. Buy a file that includes that range and you are all set.

Using a die can cause more damage at this point.

Buy two shaft nutz and make a thread chaser out of one of them. Contact our go to buddy Murray Park in Tiffen Ohio and tell him what your c-body iz. Worst case scenario iz you buy a whole shaft from him,. Welcome to FCBO from one Jar Head to another, Jer

There iz another course ofcourse, lol. You probably have every thing you need rite there in J-ville. Cheap wheel puller = Harbor Freight over on Western Blvd. If you need 2-3 different bolts and the right size nut for fabing your thread chaser = Fastenal over on Middle st. And any hardware store - for a flat Bastard for removing the hammered mushroom unfortunately installed. And MAYBE Even a correct pinch nut on a steering shaft in one of the four wracking yards in your fair city(let your fingerz do the walking). Doesn't have to be from your car or year. Mother Mopar hasn't change that shaft or nut it probably 40-50 yearz. Az you were ladd, Jer

As Jer said... the nut shouldn't be so painful... I bet someone makes them for E Bodies...:D

Kill the mushroom first, and the treads should be easy enough too.

To add to what Big_John said... let us know before you you try the hammer on anything... I promise it will be worth the delay to not go through this again.:poke:
