A response that was better than nothing. Plus it visually indicated when the carb was in the power mixture, with the implication that you needed to keep the light "out" for best fuel economy. Interestingly, in a few rent cars I drove back then, the '74 Plymouth 360 2bbl was easier to keep the light out on than a similar 400 2bbl was.
Personally, I thought it was pretty neat as nobody really knew when the power mixture kicked-in. With the light, it was obvious. Apparently, the author doesn't consider fuel economy to be "a user problem"?
