Old Man with a Hat
Really you would have to be forced to drive a car that gets better mileage. Gasoline is a terrible fuel it requires constant changes in metering to maintain air/fuel ratio to even run properly let alone produce low emissions. Diesels have been direct injected always a technology that gasoline has only now become practical because they want to shut off the fuel on deceleration and downhill coasting. Diesels have been doing that also always they idle at around 35:1 air fuel ratio. It took 20 plus years for the manufacturer's to straighten the emissions out on a gas engine, once the engineers get past over engineering they are designing into the fuel control system to work with new diesel emission they will become simplified again. Gasoline is a crap fuel that deteriorates from the moment it is created it's a byproduct of the distillation process that they found a use for.So to force us to drive vehicles that use less petroleum, we have to drive a vehicle that requires a dirtier fuel and requires more complex and costly technology to operate as cleanly as gasoline.
It's becoming all too clear now...
