K car cv boot replacement

Good evening my time,
I need to replace a cv boot on my 86 Laser. I bought the boot last year and never dug into it. I'm hoping it's not a nightmare job. Does anybody have and history with these?

I just remembered when I bought one from my toronado it was too much of a pain in the *** and I boughtva brand new stub axle with the boot on it and replaced the entire thing.

Would love to get this done soon ascI want to sell the car.

You might be able to find an aftermarket split boot. Easy peasy to do.
If you were keeping the car I would replace the entire axle assy.

Didn't know that was a thing. Only other front wheel drive in have had was the toronado.

They sometimes call them "quick boots" and I'll agree that if you were keeping the car, replace the whole shaft.

Well I looked up a new axle. It's $53. I'm not messing with any boots. Looking at the new one it is precisely the same configuration as my old toronado. The axle for that car was $250.

Then it doesn't make sense to screw around with the boot.

You might be able to change the boot with the axle in the car, so that would be the benefit of the split boot.

I once replaced both axles on a 1988 Chrysler Town & Country wagon.
One side slipped right in.
The other side would not go into the transmission no matter what.
When I looked very closely at the splined shaft, I couldn't see it by eye but could feel with a dental pick a minute burr at the beginning of the grooves on the splined part.
Lightly filed the start of the grooves and the shaft slipped right in on the first try.

I've been selling auto parts for 25 years. I have never bothered with a split boot because of the trouble that customers have had installing them. Most of the time they get returned, covered in grease, and glue, and either a real boot or axle is purchased. It's not really that hard to replace to boot, but an inexpensive axle is the way to go.
