I have never really taken the Polara out for a long drive so decided to do so today and at the same time clean the cooling system. On Saturday got everything drained from the radiator and block before filling with water and Cascade. While under the car I also replaced the worn out sway bar bushings. Next up those strut rod bushings and then the U-joints.

With that off we went for roughly a 160 mile drive heading up US 780 to CA 12 to US 80 towards Sacramento and then up 505 north which is a nice uncrowded two lane highway. First, stop to top off the gas as I am still unsure what my mpg is. The car pretty much takes up two spaces at the pumps after pulling up far enough to get the hose to the filler tube. Luckily the guy in front had his tank filler all the way at the back quarter as I just about pushed him out into the open. He did say nice antique although I don't believe the car is based on my method of classification.

So what I noticed. The engine performed flawlessly. Smooth idle and smoothly running the whole nonstop trip. However, the thing that bothers me is that the engine doesn't seem to have much in the way of torque off the line with the standard high gearing. Strong thoughts about when time to rebuild make the engine a 408 stroker and concentrate on more torque.

On CA 12 there was some wind and I noticed the car did respond to the crosswind. Drives straight as an arrow though when hands off the wheel and road flat. Brakes have never been an issue as they have always worked well since it was the first thing done after buying the car. Only one clanking noise and it turned out to be the corner of the ash tray hitting the top of it's housing despite the bumpers. After that it was also a quite drive leaving the AM radio off. Have to get the AM/FM radio checked out and get it into the dash.

Thinking about it this is the first time I have driven one of the older cars more than 100 miles non-stop since 1977. In 1977 I drove the Cougar from San Diego to the Bay Area when I started grad school.

I'm glad that you are having a nice road trip! I'm in the middle of a road trip right now. With my 2018 RAM instead of my 1978 NYB. My first trip since my 3 hospital excursions last year. I wish I had the NYB with the beautiful 70° weather in Wisconsin. Anyways....tbe RAM is so creature comfort relaxing. I'm looking forward to the 1000 mile road trip back to Maryland later this week.I'll agree that there is nothing like a good road trip.

Maybe now you will get her out more.
No photos huh?

The 360 was never a torque machine. She will scream for you as she tries to live up to big block expectations.
They are my favorite of the Chrysler small blocks as they seem to give it more than their all.

“filling with water and Cascade” do tell.. what does this accomplish? Details plz.. Nice road trip by the way. Love road trips.

I think that was just talked about in another thread recently. It’s supposed to help break up hard deposits in the system iirc..
And I agree, no pics???:wtf:

Indeed. Waiting patiently.

The other thing I noticed is that I don't have a passing gear, the ability to kick down despite being adjusted correctly.

Cascade:Flushing cooling system with citric acid?

Pictures? Well I was driving the whole time and had no intention to stop. Not until I got to 505 was I free of traffic so to speak as 80 is always busy for the run from Sacramento - San Francisco and back. Headed east I was somewhat ok but as I went up I saw that on the return trip west I wouldn't be so lucky along 80 and wasn't. The 505 goes up the valley which is all farming and flat. Nothing too scenic just a nice two lane highway with little traffic until you get farther north into hills and then mountains. Did find a few previous pictures of the road since I need to travel up to Williams once every 4 months.

First time since '77? I was 2! That's cool, though, at least they get driven. And being in a populated area I suppose you don't have far to go. I'm not out on long ventures every day, but I get in a few runs each year where triple digit miles are added.

You have to at least take a before, during and after pictures next time you take the Polara out to stretch it's legs!

So how much Cascade did you use?

Never tried it in a gas engine. We use it in diesels after an oil cooler failure. It cleans the oil out the entire system with no suds.

Cascade works great if the transmission cooler has leaked oil into the cooling system, it will clean it out so that it can be drained out with the coolant. Also works good to clean up rust and scale deposits. If you are going to do this, do not mix Cascade with any antifreeze, get rid of the anti freeze first. Second, Cascade is a mild base, it does not play well with aluminum, so you should not use it if the vehicle has an aluminum radiator or heater core. Also note that Cascade has a mild abrasive to aid getting your dishes clean, be sure to drain and flush the system after use to get rid of all that.

"Parts" run???

Since I had no guide lines I used 3 cups into the 16 qt (?) system. First removed all that was in there from the radiator and the block. Fortunately, when I replaced two freeze plugs I pulled out the original block plugs and put in drain cocks which I can reach without jacking the car up. When I got back I drained the radiator first and then removed the lower hose to get some more out. Then hooked a hose to the top position for the heater hose and flushed the block out the bottom hose. Then flushed out the radiator through the bottom hose. Then drained what was left in the block through the drain cocks. The water drained out after the drive showed only a small amount of haze.
