My Non-C Body Plymouth Orphan

Okay... So I've been busy trying to get stuff dealt with prior to winter which hits hard and sudden in Ontario.

I tore down 591 to see what it truly needed... I wasn't really surprised at what I found.

It needs a donor car. But the rot seems to be fairly isolated

And a few glamour shots of it in the sun after I washed it.

Now into some interesting stuff....

I tracked down the fleet SGT. Who worked for Windsor at the time this car was up fitted and put Into service. In fact he saw the complete life cycle of this unit.

Windsor utilized 3 primary types of police vehicle at the time, Patrol units, Traffic units and Detectives units.

Patrol units were marked Caravelles with Federal Aerodynic or Federal Twinsonic light bars.

Traffic units were marked Caravelles with no roof lighting and instead had red high beam lamps with a federal signal flasher and red rear package tray lamps, they also had radar units installed.

Detectives units were primarily unmarked Caravelles.

591 was put in service in September 1985 as a Patrol unit. It was driven as a Sgt until 1986 and received little to no mileage.

It was at that time Bill repurposed it as a traffic division unit. The lightbar was removed, and the aforementioned high beams and rear shelf lights were installed.

It was here that it served for the next two years. Spring 1988 it became Bill's fleet car until January 1989 when it was decommissioned.

A few interesting things to note, 591 was the first car Windsor outfitted with a cage.

591 was one of the lowest mileage cars to escape Windsors fleet. It currently sits at 116k km's, Bill informed me most went to auction with 180k + on average.

At this time 591 is the only known surviving Windsor Police unit of that era.

Some other interesting info about Windsor Police and Chrysler Canada's relationship;

Windsor Police was Chrysler Canada's test mule for fleet vehicles. In the time that Bill was both part time and fulltime with the Police fleet they had numerous test vehicles from Chrysler. Including a 1982 Caravelle equipped with a 360, upon Bill's testing he found that its performance was par to that of the 318 4 barrel in urban policing. They also piloted the first propane fleet cars, actually taking their own EMCO converted cars to HQ for viewing and testing, and received in turn the first batch of factory converted cars 2 years before they were a fleet option.
