New Ram Tailgate

I doubt this option would be popular with people that actually use the truck as an actual work truck.

True enough, but I don't think that's who it's aimed for. FWIW, despite it's utility I wouldn't get a Ram Box because I don't like how it looks but that's just me. It's all about choices, if they don't get allot of takers it'll be gone.

Probably a government regulation.
Maybe, I don't know. But in '11, FCA requested suggestions on designs and requested they be hand sketches. Mine was a sliding guard to keep things like topsoil and small stones from sliding between the tailgate and bed keeping it from closing, (you'd have to pull the gate to clean it out).

Also a storage slot for your hitch when not in use.

The Ram Box wouldn't be practical for me....

Personally I'm looking for a used (I don't by new) Ram Box equipped 3/4 ton. Not easy to find. Time to upgrade my '01 Cummins 5 speed. The wife's knee won't allow her to push in a clutch anymore so time to find an automatic. With a Ram Box I can do away with the diamond plate tool box I've had for decades and go with a shortbed.

Post pics of the 01, I always liked a stick shift.

So the press release with pictures has dropped.

Split Ends: Ram Introduces 'MultiFunction' Tailgate - The Truth About Cars

Ram's New Multifunction Tailgate Has A Split Personality

They are not advertising that you can lower one side individually, as is depicted in the patent drawings. When lowering the tailgate you can only lower the entire tailgate at once, and there are cables on the sides. If the latch connecting the two sides together is beefy enough, that would explain how it's still going to be able to hold a decent amount of weight when lowered. They claim 2000lb capacity. I imagine most people loading something heavy would opt to open the tailgate to the sides and drop the load right onto the bed when possible though.

They are showing this on a truck with the RamBox. I wonder if it will be available separately from the RamBox, or they need the extra wide box sides for added rigidity with this tailgate? I personally have no use for the RamBox. Like @1978 NYB I always put a cap on my pickup box.

Ram Box is just something for thieves to target for tools....unless you live and work out in the middle of no where.

I believe you have to have the Ram Box option to get the bed divider feature in the bed. My Ram doesn't have the Ram Box option and it doesn't have the bed divider feature either.
