I also had a '68 Charger that got all the love back then, I wasn't sinkin' any money I didn't have to into my daily drivers and its the same way I work to this day.

a buddy had an 84 daytona turbo z 5 spd. surprisingly quick car. could get rubber in 3 gears. test drove an 86 tubo z. couldn't hold a candle to the 84. my father had an 86 lancer turbo. like was stated above, killer lag but once it got rolling it was ok. my brother had a shadow turbo. that thing was so underpowered the turbo didn't matter
