Rebuild a 1966 727 transmission for a 383 engine.

Want to buy a rebuilt torque converter but they are available with or without weights.

Which one is the correct one for a 1966 383 Newport.

Thanks

No weights.

The weights are for externally balanced engines and your 383 is internally balanced.

Agree, "No weights".

The "weights" being mentioned here are not the normal, very thin weights used to balance the completed torque converter, which are usually minimal in number. On the "external balance" motors, there will be two THICK rectangular weights, one on each side of the drain plug. When the normal engine balance operations need more weight, they would normally be part of the flywheel casting, but as the automatic transmission cars have a "flex plate" rather than a flywheel, the next closest location is the torque converter assy itself.

No internal differences in the converter itself, just the add-on weights for external balance motors.

Your existing torque converter should be "without weights", as it came from Chrysler.

If it's not a 71 2bbl 383 ,it's a forged crank, int balanced.
But your actual problem will be making sure you get the correct 66 and down course spline converter.
Not easy to find from what I have heard.
Many people convert them to the 67 up input shaft.
