does anyone know of a source for the old style of rubberized undercoating in spray cans? i am looking for the thick bumpy stuff. it seems that most of the new stuff is thinner, like paint.

You want the 3M™ Rubberized Undercoating 08883 stuff. Not the 08881 stuff at AutoZone et al. And never the Rustoleum stuff.
It still won't be the goo Mopar used back in the day. You'd need a concrete pump for that stuff. Ask Ross if roofing stuff can be sprayed.

Roofing stuff can be sprayed but I don't think it would do well in that application.

Don't those spray products cause moisture problems & aren't you better off just using flat black spray paint?

I had a bad cat converter on my 1978 NYB. It got hot enough to burn a hole the size of a baseball through the shield but it didn't even burn or melt the undercoating.

I tried using the roofing sealant on one of my cars. It didn't last very long until it all cracked. I find the Bondo brand aerosol rubberized undercoating to work quite well, but it does have to be touched-up every now and then.
My Newport has the old thick undercoating under it. Problem is whoever did it sprayed everything. Maybe they did spray it with concrete, I don't know. :laughing11: The stuffs as hard as a rock! I've tried scraping, chiselling, using Varsol and other paint remover. I even tried spraying it with brake cleaner and gasket remover. So far nothing takes it off. :frustrated:
I'm not trying to remove all of it, at least not at the moment. I would like to get it off the small parts and adjusters though.

Heat is your friend. I've used propane torches with great success, but I would expect a good heat gun would work too, but not as good as the torch.

The torch worked for me the best at getting it off. Was the only thing that would get the stuff off of the inner fenders i was cleaning. Had to heat it up, then take a scrapper to it. Time consumimg, but the best result.

If the stuff is really dried out and old a cold day in winter can be your friend; just a few soft blows with a hammer will literally let it jump off to my experience.
