USS Lexington found

Remember all US Navy planes belong to the Navy, in perpetuity, no matter where they are.

Doesn't this also apply to all US Gov property such as the ship?

Also what is the black cat looking logo on the plane?

The Navy is funny about their planes more than the Air Force is. Of course it applies to the ship but no private venture has ever tried to raise a sunken Navy ship or ever will.

The logo, which is Felix the Cat, call sign Felix is the second oldest name and emblem in the Navy today. Dates back to it's first use by squadron VF-3. VF-2 was embarked on the Lexington at the time of Coral Sea. Some planes, of VF-3, were transferred to the Lex before the battle and as can be seen didn't get repainted yet. The plane shown, now identified as F-5, was flown by Noel Gayler who did go on to get his fifth kill and become an ace. He ended the war with three Navy Crosses and retired at the rank of Admiral. For those who remember pictures concerning the return of our POWs from Vietnam Adm. Gayler was the man greeting them at Clark Air Base, Angeles, Philippines.
