I don't think that the tailgate is functional....
Perhaps he installed a swing-gate from a wagon? That would work. But you're right, I think the tailgate would bend badly at the bottom if it opened normally.

While I agree something got ruined. I don't see 80k. A Chrysler Sebring, a Nissan Murano, most of a JC Whitney catalog. I do hope those 59 Caddy fins came off a fiberglass couch though. Someone had A LOT of time on their hands.
