Car has 14" wheels now, want to switch to a 15 or 16 inch wheel, 8 inch wide, with about 4 to 5 inch backspace, will I run into any problems with the 8in wheel and up to 5" backspace?

I'm going to bet the tire would contact the spring or damn close but I'll wait for someone who know's or knows how to measure it

I have 15x8 4" BS on my 66 with 275/60. The tire is a little tight on the skirt but doesn't rub. 4.5" would put the tire in a little deeper and still leave lots of spring clearance.

5" will probably fit but on my slab I would measure/confirm spring clearance first.

Go with 275/60R15 tyres on 8" wide rim, 4.5" B/S. My '69 Fury I has 275's mounted on 7" wide cop rims (thanks Bryan and Ben) under the arse, and Ben said no clearance issues. I did a bit of research before ordering the 8" widened cop rims that will ultimately go under there, should present no problems either.

Please note though that the '69 rear axle is slightly narrower than the '70 axle (the '69 being a carry over from the '65-'68 cars)...

My 71 Polara Brougham, Those are 275's... damn it, I will have to look tomorrow I think 275 60s on 15x 8" wheels with a 4.5 back space. I am certain a 5" will work but never tried it

1971 Newport, 15x8 4.5 inch backspacing, 235/70-15 tire.

just over one inch clearance between inner quarter and tire on outside, plenty of room on backside of tire/wheel.

4.5 or 5.0 backspacing, round-ish shoulder radials (versus the square-ish bias ply tires) no wider than 275/60-15 and you're probably in real good shape

'69 Fury I with 275's mounted on 7" wide cop rims, test fit, no clearance issues. 8" widened cop rims with 4.5" backspace, same tyres, to ultimately go under there...

Don't forget sidewall height and flex for going around corners and curves when deciding how close to get either side
