Wish I could afford these tires

Anybody running bias plies should have a police escort to warn the innocent drivers who actually run safe equipment.

I purchased again four 2.25" wide whitewall bias ply tires for my '59 Imperial in 2013. They were my second set and I thought about radials and the pro's and cons on both. For that car I don't regret the decision I made. On the '66 Olds Toronado that I purchased last month I went with radilals. Why?, because two reasons: I had five in the basement with only a few thousand miles on them and they were the 1 1/2" whitewall design. On a dark colored car with the chrome wheel option it will look "neato".

Those tires should not be legal to be driven on the road, I and my property are now at risk because of your piss poor excuse for a tire. This is the same as driving your atv on the interstate.

Whattttttttt????

Ross talking safety???????????

I'm all about it. I paid big bucks for the safety package on my wife's Durango. Oh, and don't forget the disc brakes on my Polara.

I remember, Pete & I get why you did it but I respectfully disagree with you on this issue.

DB makes a 2.25" whitewall in a modern tire. More money but that's the price of admission into the '59 Imperial club...

ok, I am late to the party.
I am a constant bias ply tire driver.
All my muscle cars drive on the correct bias ply they had new from the factory.
Meaning all 1970 models on Goodyear Polyglas (F70-14) and Polyglas GT (F60-15), all cars till 1969 on Goodyear Speedways or Firestone Wide Oval red streak tires. No exception.
After checking the brakes and all fluids pretty much the first thing I do is install the correct tires.

I also collect original tires and set ups that aren't reproduced. But those are mostly used for show, I don't drive often on 45 year old tires. I have already two H70-15 Polyglas GT which aren't repriduced but needed for a certain Fuselage.

The only reason why I don't drive My c-bodies on bias ply is that the correct tires aren't reproduced.

In general: The tires were used when the cars were brand new. If your grand ma could drive them back in the day I am positive you can do it, too today.

Stan, with your people skills I'm sure you could be a greeter at Walmart for a month and pick that set up no problema.

Does running those tires mean my speedo will be correct?

No but it will "look" correct....

Stan wouldn't last one shift at the front door with his blue vest and his roll of smiley face stickers! LOL!:poke:

Last month it wouldn't have even been 5 minutes standing behind The Salvation Army bell ringer...

don't know the comparison to a radial.
But I can handle the Polyglas well as long as they aren't old and aged

Save that crap for car shows and museum pieces. Those tires hamper your car and need to be put away period.

So I take it you do not allow your family in your cars as the old cars have no airbags, antilock brakes, crumple zones, high strength steel...

I just spent some time looking for something to back up the safety issue but could find nothing. We're talking passenger car tires, not off-road, trailer or motorcycle and not retreads.
All I could find was that Bias will heat up faster, flat spot when parked, wear faster but not one comment about them failing. Yes radials handle better, better tread patterns available, lower profiles.

I recently drove a C-body with bias tires and manual steering, yes I had to drive differently, you needed to lead the turns, brake in a little more but all in all the car drove quite well once you adjusted.

I'm just changing tires not reinventing the dash and crumple zones on a 40 year old car fact is yes I can drive the car on the rims but when some ******* in a 199.00/mo. shitbox does something stupid and I need to avoid hitting the ******* I'll take my modern radials and revised alignment specs. You can do as you wish just don't invovle me. They were okay for your grandma when everybody elses grandma was on the same tires.

The guy you run over because of twice the stopping distance of a Brembo ceramik braked modern sports car won't care if that's done with bias plies or radials. To me there's no point in such a discussion. With that kind of argumentation every ancient apparatus should be banned from use.

I run original tread new tube type high speed narrow Michelin tires on two of my cars, radials though already, and they handle better than many of the middle priced comparable wider tires for this car dry and wet surfaces, there has been some advance built in the rubber mixture itself also I guess.

And all this started out simply because I said I like the looks....

Still, nobody has made a compelling argument against just running radials. Some attempts to justify plies but always with the admission that radials handle better and are safer.

And, anybody who would notice a difference in the appearance needs to get over it.
