Thanks guys .. another reason why this is the best forum on the net.
Very cool! My younger son is learning to play now, as well. He started on the piano and is decent on that, but he got a free guitar a few weeks back. Now, he traded for a second on with an amp. Sounds pretty good!
Now, if I can just get him to find a ^&$$^*&-ing job...!
Very cool Patrick I wish him success too. My daughters have been bagging groceries at the commissary since they were 16, they're 19 now and in college. They're helping pay their way and have money for when they are out with friends or want to buy clothes or makeup and stuff. They get anywhere from $10 to $20 an hour depending on how busy it is.
My daughter has been playing acoustic guitar for 4-5 years now...She's almost 14. She's pretty good, and has recently been using a music App on her iPod called ultimateguiter, or the online version is ultimateguitar.com.
Cool. I can't wait for her to be able to play a song. She was so happy yesterday going to pick it up at the guitar store and played around with it for several hours once we got home until she had to go to work. I checked out that site and have passed it along to her.
I bought a kids acoustic for my youngest daughter this Christmas. The very first thing that I do with any guitar is take it to an expert luthier (not the kids at the guitar store) for a set up. Fortunately for me, I have a good friend who is a master luthier.
I tuned my daughter's guitar to open E for a while for her to get comfortable and she's learning the location of the bar chords. I personally use youtube all the time to learn new songs. My favorite teacher by far is Marty Schwartz at guitarjamz.
Thanks Ross I passed that website along to her as well. I had to look up
"luthier" for an exact definition but had an idea what it was from the way you used it. New term for us
Very cool to see young people playing music!
Concur Bob. They like a lot of the music I like and listen to a lot of the classics from the late 60's early 70's. I think Queen is their favorite though.
That's excellent Bryan, can't wait to hear about her progress.
Thanks Matt I'll keep you guys updated. Yesterday was the first day so we'll see how it goes and I hope she enjoys it
That is awesome! Congrats!! I have an Epi JR with the soap bar pickup and I love it. I had it setup professionally and a bone nut installed. What a difference it made. The best thing is get her lesson if possible. I've been playing a long time and never took a lesson, but I have a good ear and learned everything by ear. She may have a good ear. You'll have to see how she does. I would suggest that she practices at least a half hour a day. Her finger tips will hurt for a while until they callus up. I'm sure the guitar came with either 9 gauge strings or 10s. I would put on 8 gauge until she get used to it. It will be easier for her to play. Also the link you posted is really good and seems to show a lot. I wish her the best with it and keep us posted on her progress.
Thanks for all the tips John. I'll research what you said .. "soap bar" .. "bone nut"
LOL
I'll also look into the gauge of the strings. She has pretty delicate fingers and went and cut off her nails to play .. she's quite the artist when it comes to doing nails so that surprised me how she just cut them. For Christmas she put Santa and 9 reindeer incl Rudolf on them .. looked fantastic!
A friends daughter takes lessons even though he plays. I'll look into seeing if there's someone around us that teaches.
Congrats Bryan! Something I always wanted to try, but never got around to.
Me too Zack .. I may even try !
That's wonderful. A lifetime of enjoyment awaits. I have three acoustic guitars and one electric. Personally I find that switching between the two styles keep things fresh and interesting. Good luck and Congrats!
Thanks Kevin. If she sticks with it I'll support here fully. I was pretty surprised at the amount of guitars under $400 and A LOT under $300 even there were. They had hundreds probably and I could see getting her one later on if wants one.
