1964 Chrysler 300K convertible/a c-body?

It might be worth your time to join the Chrysler 300 Club (chrysler300club.com) and receive their club news letters like I do. Although I have not used this source in the past because the windshields in my Chrysler 300 letter cars are all original so far, he seems to have a good reputation in the club for providing quality replacement glass for those brutes, although his prices are on the high side, but then, you get what you pay for. He advertises in the club news letter and this is what the ad says:

"New Windshields for 57 - 64 Mopar hardtop/convert. OEM quality reproductions with correct "bubble", tint, fit. Not South American made. Prices from $500. Timo Tanskanen. 5885 Jurupa Ave #G, Riverside, CA 92504, 951-687-6579, Fax: 951-687-5963."

And pomoamissel, you really need to proof read and/or slow down when responding to posts on this site, as most of the time I can't even understand what you are trying to say! Frustrating.

Thanks Mr C. While your informative post prolly wouldn't make my autobody shop guy any leerier than he already is, it certainly made me leerier than when I started this thread today. 8^( Any suggestions on how I might resolve this issue? Jack E/NJ

Piecing together the helpful info I got from everyone here, the generic brand W590 or DW590 (Domestic Windshield) part# listed in NAGS and advertised by about a half-dozen sellers seems correct for the 300K convertible and *similar-size* pre-1965 Mopars.

The main issue is that all these sellers seem to be offering NEW repros. So fit is a concern, especially for my glass guy. He's apparently been burned a few times over return shipping and time-wasted for poor-fitting glass. But our 8-month search for an unclouded or crackfree NOS or good-used hasn't panned out. I'm now about ready to gamble on a repro just to get moving on this. But I'm gonna have to overrule my glass guy and also pay return shipping and time-wasted if we get poor-fitting glass.

Here's my dilemma. I found that W590 prices+shipping range from a low of ~$475 for a big manufacturer's (Japan) wholesaler to a high of ~$1700 for a small ebay retailer. That's a big spread---almost 400%! And there's probably only one other big manufacturer (SA or China) known to be reproducing this same part. And except for the one wholesaler, I really don't know from which manufacturer these other sellers are getting their glass. So there seems to be a fine line here between getting what I pay for, and getting ripped off.

What would you guys recommend? Should I keep on searching NOS or good-used like my glass guy wants? Or take a chance on one of the repro sellers to at least feel we're moving on this?

Thanks

Jack E/NJ

Finding a good used one, is problematic. You have to locate one , then its gotta be in good shape, no chips or delamination. Then you have to remove it safely and reinstall it safely. . . . . Id go with the new Glass

OK polara71, that's sorta my position after 8 mos of searching. Do you have any advice on who I should try first. A mfr's wholesaler at $475 with shipping directly to my glass guy? Or $1700 from an ebay retailer who may(or may not) be offering the same mfr's repro? Or someone in between who you might know & trust? Thanks. Jack E/NJ

I would probably go with new as well. Would you really want to see some clouding down the line after all this work? I have never heard of a single complaint from the Chrysler 300 Club regarding the glass Timo sells, and he has been doing it a long time. But then he is the highest priced too. Tough decision. For me, I don't like doing things twice. How about thickness of the various repro glass for this application - you want the glass to fit the weatherstrip nicely too?

Off hand, I do not. It has been probably ten years since I had a windshield replaced. I am one of the few on the board however that will pay the high end for a part because it is needed and I want it 100%. Because of that I may be the wrong guy to ask.

As noted earlier, there is a place in Jersey that sells windshields with all the correct markings. Expensive, but you need it/ want it and they have it.

Have you tried here?:

Vintage Glass

I bought a windshield for my 4DSD from them. $275 + $150 shipping from Ontario, CA to Albany, NY. Quality and fit were good.

The best way to get info/pricing is to follow what the website says. Calling them only resulted in them telling me to go to their website.

**DISCLAIMER**
I have no idea where they get their stock from.

If nothing else it may get you more info for your search.

Hope the input helps.

John

I'm having difficulty with the concept that more than one manufacturer is making these W.S. replacements.

The only mfr I'm fairly sure about is NSG (Japan). The SA & China references were mainly hearsay from others that I remember seeing. Jack E/NJ

I have called Vintage Glass in the past, and they have been upfront and tell you that they source their glass is from a number suppliers and they will generally get the cheapest one for you. I doubt there are a lot of suppliers of the more obscure glass that some of our cars need. They are only a couple miles from me, so at least the shipping charges can be avoided too in my case. Sometimes, they can't find what I need from their suppliers.

Re: DW590 supplier
As I recall, the only domestic manufacturers of the DW590 were PPG and Shatterproof.

The DW604 will fit but the angle of the glass entering the top of the rubber gasket is not perfect.

We can supply a Chinese made DW590. I've sold a few but, I can't say how they except that I have had no complaints. The Chinese glass does not has the DOT number located near the bottom of the glass.

FWIW, Googling DW590 windshield gave me a lot of hits from a lot of different sources

I can't help you with the windshield, but I hope some of the offerings here will.

Is it s C Body? No, not really. Many people start the C Body with the 1965 large body cars of Chrysler, Plymouth, and Dodge, because that's when the VINs changed from just numbers to letters and numbers, and the big Chryslers start with C.

That won't explain with earlier Dodge and Plymouth smaller cars were already called A and B, but, there's a theory.

Even so, many people will call it a C Bod for which I don't really have a problem. I had a '62 New Yorker for quite a while, and every Mopar Show I entered it was put into the C Body Class. So would be any late '50s Chrysler or DeSoto.

But, don't call an Imperial a C - you'll get attacked!

Thanks, Commando1. 'Pilk' which I assume means Pilkington, is in fact NSG's wholesaler now. My glass guy and the NSG rep are supposed to be talking to one another to decide if this will fit. Then the only other issue I know my glass guy is worried about is the gasket. I told him not to worry as we'll just use a bunch of GE clear silicone II RTV from Home Depot if needed. 8^) Jack E/NJ

I know that when looking for parts on my 1963 300, everyone classifies it as a C body. If you are looking for a windshield gasket, I have seen them on ebay. You could also check out a website that I found www.63chrysler.com. They have links for parts and info for the 63 and 64 Chryslers .
