1965 Autronic Eye

Hi. Was there a 1965 factory option auto head light dimmer? If anyone can send a pic of one my search will carry on.

I dont know exactly when MOPAR started with the option but it was Delco part and was around since 54 i think if my memory is right. Like most MOPAR options there were Delco made (Radios, Power door locks, Vent window motor, auto lighting, etc. I have the dimmer in three of my cars. After a electronic rebuild and upgrade there do work and not to bad.

I discovered that the search tune radios were Delco items when I found them in a Delco Radio service manual listing. AM and FM versions, probably as long as Chrysler offered search tune radios, but not sure when it all started. I believe the GM uses started with 1955 models?

Cadillacs used the Autronic set-up, but I believe their sensor was on the cowl?

Good thing that Chrysler didn't use Delco speakers!

in '68 the sensor moved out on the hood. up until then it was on the dash.........

I have a unit from the dash of a ‘67 Imp in unknown condition and its missing the harness.

My parent's 1955 Olds had such an "electric eye" on the dash. It used a side-on photomultiplier tube to sense light, which I know from academic research (see Hamamatsu), which became the biggest market for those components. But, the unit shown in the photo looks much different (smaller). Likely by 1965, they were using either a silicon photodiode (still current) or photo-resistor. As 2-lane highways were replaced by interstates, such auto-dimmers lost demand. They appear to be making a comeback since many cars already have the sensors, so just requires software to enable it now.

GM was the first to come out with them in 1952 I think for Oldsmobile and Cadillac, they were called Autronic Eye. They were not that sophisticated as the later ones in the 60s from what I read.

Buried somewhere around her I have a HiWay Eye that does the same thing. Got it out of a 65 Chrysler. Don't think it was a factory option, probably an aftermarket item. Isn't in my 66 parts manual.

I'm looking for the headlight sentinel setup. One of the last options I'm looking for my 66 New Yorker. It's in the service manual and parts manual. A few pieces are on parts voice but not the complete setup. Need to know where the light sensor is mounted too.

Right on top of the dash in front of the steering column about halfway between the edge of the dashpad and the windshield or at least that’s where the are on ‘67 Imperials.
