Good afternoon - my old tank was rusted out from it being left empty. I've purchased a new one with a new sending unit. I was curious if the gasket needs to be on the inside or out?

The old tank was swiftly discarded by the wife :(

Oh and I just painted the new top with por15 just as a precautionary measure.

Makes sense it would be inside - just not sure if it was a gasket that was rated for fuel....

No bother, the only dumb question is the one you don’t ask.

Thanks - I was waiting to hear how I shouldn't be working on cars! lol which is probably true but I'm having a blast!

I removed the undercoating and treated with por15, new leaf springs from Eaton in Michigan, now I just need to get that DAMN YELLOW off the axle and drive shaft before I can get the new leafs installed.

I hope you reused that old lock ring for the sending unit, the new ones leak.

no! that sucks - I'll be keeping a close eye on it.

This is what was in the tank when I purchased the car. You can clearly see on the bottom tang, it doesn't extend far enough, and it's the same at the other two tangs.

I didn't even get the old ring in straight, and it seals just fine.

If you have the old ring, I'd take the time and reinstall it. There are some old NOS rings floating around, I bought a couple for spares.

I'll answer your question with a question. What was the order of parts when you took it apart? That's how it should go back together. Good Luck

It was very sad, I didnt disassemble - I ordered a new tank and fuel sending unit since it was so rusted out. my wife LOVES to throw things away and all I had was that photo above.
