Trunk Mat Truths. What’s correct?

It’s a cold winter day. So I got to thinking, What is the correct trunk mat pattern and does it vary between Dodge, Chrysler, and Plymouth? What is truth (original picture or P/N), opinions without verification are just opinions. Here is what I know. Full disclosure, I like these trivial details. My main focus is for my ‘68 Polara, but will take all proof or verified examples of slab or fuselage trunk mats. Comparing the ‘67 and ‘68 parts book. Only Dodge are the same for those two years. Why are the others different Between ‘67 & ‘68? Pattern? Size?
Here is a matrix from '65 through '69. It would be nice to put a pattern and or special features of a trunk mat to the P/N. I only have one example with proof ('68 Dodge convertible P/N 2788713) My assumption is that the patterns are the same within the brands, but are they across models.

As for repro. Here is what I got 10 years ago from REM. Not quite right in my opinion.

So after seeing the convertible OEM in previous post, I thought needed to find one with the right pattern.
Fail for ‘68 Dodge I must have had a brain fart. I swear I ordered a herringbone one. Got a plaid. Vans / REM labeled for ‘67, ‘68 Polara Monaco

I noticed my 66 300 convertible trunk mat is blocked out, no surprise many odd different one year only items on my car including the floor mats I had to gave them custom made.

I wish I could get what was originally look in my car. It was a textured thick solid rubber mat, but it became hard and actually crumbled when I attempted to remove it.

I will have to see if I have a picture, when I removed it nothing was much bigger than a quarter. I may have never taken a picture, because I thought I could just buy a new exact replica, I was just a ignorant c-body newbie back then.

For my 68 Newport it had the herring bone but was in very poor shape..
Years ago,I was given a plaid one for free!
National Moparts got a bum shipment where the die cuts were in the wrong locations. They could not sell them so after spending big bux there one day,Nigel tossed one in with my order. I cut holes in it to fit the spare tire and jack brackets,donee deal.
Not correct but it free works for me!

'66 was a weird year in the parts books. If it is blocked out at it may be listed below the block. It seemed they had a special mat for every Chrysler configuration that year. However C-H or C-P is not listed anywhere. Did they use carpet? or something else.

It was black "rubber" but definitely not the same material as the rubber floor mats in the interior, not pliable but hard.

This car was totally original when I got it, and this mat was definitely fit to the exact shape of the floor. I know the previous owner would have never bought any custom aftermarket. If he had done anything it would have been a half dozen random floor mats he picked up at the junk yard.

So can you confirm that it was the same pattern as what I showed in the 2nd post (P/N 2788713) for the '68 Polara convertible. This would help confirm the pattern for P/N 2877080 Chrysler 2 & 4 dr.

There were a couple of remnants and the plaid design most of the aftermarket folks sell is not the same. It was a hard rubber, sort of a hounds tooth design, grey & black. Still looking for a supplier. I thought Dante had them but can't find it in their catalog.

Figuring these cars were built in various plants, then supplied by a number of vendors, any two cars on a dealers lot back then could have different pattern and color trunk mats.
Kinda like tires. 99% of our new mopars came with Goodyears but a few came with Uniroyals.

Maybe, but typically in a manufacturing situation one P/N means one supplier so they can track the revisions. Also these were all die cut, so maybe would get expensive to set up separate dies for each factory plus all the unique part numbers. I was surprised that each brand and convertible styles had their own P/N. This does not seem as generic item as we think it is.

The spare was in a different location in the convertibles, off to the right side (see picture).
Here is my original 69 Dodge Polara (car is a sedan but CHP had Dodge put the spare in the convertible location)

My Newport was an early build (Sept.67) and a 4dr and yes had the herringbone mat (what was left of it anyways)when I bought it

Yes Marty. The remnants I have are the same as that.

When I got my 66-300, it had a black ribbed mat that looks like one of those hallway runners. It was so dried out that if I looked at it hard enough it would crack. I'm now using a old oriental rug left over from the folks house.

Valuable tidbit of information for when you find one:
Ive found that cutting a piece of cheap rebond carpet pad into the shape of the mat and laying it between the mat and the trunk really helps prevent the typical "rust problem" that comes with these vinyl mats.

The Mopar Mall one's look just like what have now, If you really squint you can maybe see a herring bone pattern the the plaid which is like I got the other day. Neither really match the original. But they will do the job.

The one from Dantes is a little closer match for 67 - 68 dodge, just a little darker.
