Brass is the way to go.

An option, that may be easier to install, would be these Dorman Products - 02483

You'll have to double check the size... I've read that these are often used by boat engine builders in new builds. They make rubber expansion plugs too, but I think those aren't quite a permanent fix.

@Big_John thanks for the advice
I’m going to try to replace them like oem style but brass would you use Permatex #2

Are there freeze plugs on the front and rear of the heads as well? IIRC, they are there for a big block, but I can’t remember if they are in a small block.

Regardless, if they are there, replace them too.

The core plugs in the heads rarely leak. It's easier to get the casting sand out would be my guess.

To avoid revisiting this again I would recommend replacing all freeze plugs. w/ the age of the engine being a 1968, total freeze plug replacement would be cheap insurance against future failure. As @Toolmanmike stated the cyl head freeze plugs rarely fail. They do develop thin spots due to corrosion so for no more than they cost just plain change them. It will seem like a lot of effort, but engine removal is the easiest way to change them all w/ superior results.
