Air flow.

Guage measurement:
at gap 10 kg/hr, or 22lbs/hr.
Guage opening at gap:
3/4” x1.5”= 1,125 sq.in.
Gap area measures
3/4”x 27” = 20.25 sq.in.
Total mass is of air going through gap =
Mass of measured air flow at gap area x gap area divided by area of adgested measurement.

22lbs x 20.25 sq.in./1.125sq.in. = 396lbs/hr

Radiator opening measured 26” x 18” = 468 sq.in.

Measurement at guage at radiator was a little less at 9kg/hr or 19.8lbs/hr.

Guage opening was 1.5 diameter circle. Area of circle is pi r squared or 3.14x .75” x.75” = 1.77 sq.in.

Doing the same as above to calculate the mass/hr going through the radiator and we get 5235.25 lbs/hr

Comparatively, the gap accounts for approximately 7% of the total air volume. I would call that significant but not critical.

Stan had a similar problem if I recall, it was fixed by the lower shroud, the one that goes below the radiator. It mounts under the radiator, it's black plastic and has some air foils on it. Make sure someone hasn't taken it off over the years. Of course he blamed it on the thermostat. Lol

You're correct. I did mention that to Jav and he assured me all the shields were in place.
When he mentioned the gap, I said fix the gap. So what does he do?

AAP sells a nice 3 row radiator. The shroud doesn't exactly line up but with a little mod it will work.
 
Mind the gap....

temporary foam fill looks like *** but it’s a test. Air coming off fan felt a little warmer. Volume may be the question now. Last nights test run was marginally better. Noticeably slow warming after thermostat opened. But still too high in my opinion.

Anyone out there know temp at which the fan clutch should engage?

Last night I threw the FSM manual out the window and raised the advance by about another 4 degrees. Drivability was improved in transition. Other than temp concerns... very nice drive.

And , before you ask... drove with the window down to listen for pinging.... absolutely no pinging at all and I drove to induce some ( IE harder than typical pull aways from fulll stops, hard acceleration to fill traffic gaps)

Thanks Stan... at least I know it’s the correct radiator I’m thinking of tossing out...

Will bump up advance another 2 degrees tonight. Last four made a difference in temp. Thinking thermostat and fan clutch now.

Thermostat should be 180 degree per the recall.

Do you know if the fan clutch was a thermal or non thermal that was originally on there???

Finally, I have a pair of fans I’m thinking about for the condenser. To keep the head pressure on the compressor in check at idle rpm fan speeds. That’s the last vibration left I’m getting. Smooth as glass up to stop and then 40 seconds into the red light I start loosing a little rpm and vibration from the bucking bronco of a compressor.
