What the heck is it???

I just picked this up from a friend who got it locally from the collection of one of the original Ramchargers team drivers. I have no idea what it could be so I sent a pic to Murray and he immediately recognized the emblem in the middle as one from the C-pillar of a ‘66 2 door but had no idea about the rest of it.

I took it apart hoping for clues and found nothing except the fact that someone spent some serious time on it and had some good fabrication skills. It no ashtray that’s for sure!

But there's 4 mounting bolts on the bottom. They would scratch the hell out of a desk.

I'm wondering if someone made it as a cover for the rear seat center speaker of a convertible.

Looks to me, to be a piece of wall art or since there are 4 studs it could be mounted to a tool box, from a 300 enthusiast.

My mom was a seamstress, I agree it does have a pin cushion look to it, maybe permanently mounted to a table. Do upholstery shops use pins??

You know that material is very reminiscent of pin cushion material, good thinking gents.
My only thoughts on that is that the pad under that material is very thin even at its thickest point and is directly mounted to the metal plate so it would be easy to bottom the pins and dull them. If it is a pin cushion it’s the koolest one I’ve seen but not very professional coming from someone that makes a living with tools.

I might also tend to lean toward a tool box ornament. The fabricated backing (and the color/texture of the rubber item) give the emblem a very nice presentation situation. Looks great no matter what it's former use might have been. Would have looked good, attached to a nice piece of wood (as dark walnut or mahogany), with counter-sunk holes in the back for the nuts/studs.
