"1974 2 door Dodge Monaco 400ci 727 trans. Car runs and drives, but only has 1st, 2nd, and a weak reverse. New plugs wires cap coil and tires. Was gonna keep restoring it but have many more projects in front of it. All lights, gauges, windows work. Can drive it around in 2nd gear being it has 290 gears in the rear. Kinda rare car being a 2 door, saved from a guy that wanted to demo it... nice big Mopar. Very clean subframe, floors are great trunk is great, small amount of body rust. Call or text for more info/pictures. 608-481-0219"

Looks like a "bluemo". My guess is that the 2 door was going to be a parts car. Why no price?

It’s a little bit of an inside joke… So inside it might just be inside my own head.

The decision to drop the Polara name came VERY late in the 1973 calendar year. So late that promotional materials had already been printed showing off what we know as a '74 Monaco captioned “Polara”. The Monaco would of course have the same body shell, but was supposed to use what became the (late introduction) Royal Monaco hidden headlights, more detailed tail lamps, higher interior trims, standard 400, etc.

Some genius at Chrysler decided they should shuffle the names to whore some brand equity from the once-more-expensive Monaco name; slapping it on what would have been a low-trim/fleet Polara the year before. He probably sat at a desk next to the moron who insisted the Cordoba be marketed as the Plymouth Premier (the original plan that left easy money on the table). Or maybe it was his brother-in-law who got canned when he divorced the sister? As it relates to this particular car 40+ years later… It’s simply a very stripped example.

At any rate, I’d like to tell you this incredibly stupid thinking is dead at Chrysler but we built an SUV called “Aspen” just a few years ago, and recently killed the name Town & Country; replacing it with the name of a CUV that wasn’t well remembered.

+ such a nerd that I want to buy that car, slap on '73 Polara badges, then drive it around and see if even ONE fellow car-nerd notices, or better yet tries to buy it ($$$$) like a mis-struck coin/stamp.

I guarantee you that at every car show, someone will say to you that they had a Polara exactly like that...

I think killing the Plymouth make was a mistake. GM still has Chevies; Ford will always have Fords. Evidently the U.S. auto industry has decided to leave the entry level market to the Koreans. They're doing well enough to start their own luxury brand. If I were at GM, I would have sold them the name "Oldsmobile".
