I'll admit, I am NOT familiar with these cars. A friend just acquired a 67 Imperial. Please see photo. What is that thing on the dashboard? It says "near far" on it. Bright light indicator maybe? Does anyone know the proper name for this thing? Thank you for your help.

Agree, the automatic headlight hi-beam dimmer. Hence, the "near" and "far" sensitivity adjustment. Do you want them to think you're being lazy about dimming the high beams or "conservative"?

Built by GM's Guide Division. Similar to what Cadillac used, except in some years, the Cadillac item was on the outside on the cowl panel screen, "in the weather".

In ‘68 it moved outside.

Were they all that size on '67's or did it change at some point during production? I had a '67 and instead of that piece, mine was a much smaller and rounder black dial/knob over in the left corner of the dash next to the windshield. Or was that knob not for auto dimming on mine?

Not for dimming headlights. Turns the headlights on when it gets dark.
