Today was the day to spend a few hours trying to improve a very poor idle in Newport. Chrysler Newport, that is.
I was confident that my problems were probably due to a worn out coil, having already done compression tests, changed from original plugs and wires to new ones.
Nope. Same, poor idle. Engine sounds unhappy.
So today, points and condenser. Easy, right? Wrong!
Apparently, only one company makes these parts (from Rock Auto). Chinese. Arghhhhh.
The condenser would not mount because the bracket was too thick for very short OEM screw to get traction. Argghhh. Swapped out mount from original condenser.
The points mounted, but I couldn’t get them down to the recommended gap (.017) because the mounting base of the points was too wide. Back to the vise to hand file twice before I could get them down to proper gap set. Aarghh.
Trying to put the distributor cap back on, I discovered (horrors) that one cap clip had fallen off. In trying to dig it out from under the distributor, it fell down below into the frame hinterlands somewhere. Arghhhh.
Finally found it with my magic magnetic wand. But couldn’t figure out how to reinsert it into the distributor base. Tried everything! Arghhh!
Was just about ready to post a plea for EMERGENCY HELP when I had a Revelation! I had been trying to install the clip upside down ! Arggghhhh. Chock it up to age!
The new points (Thank you PRC) changed the timing quite a bit. Tonight I reset timing and idle speed, seems to run pretty well now. Argggh. what’s next?
Off to the upholstery shop tomorrow. Springs and foam are tired on front seat.
Regards to fellow Chrysler suffering saints!
