I should know this, but just wanted to check with you guys since I can't confirm using the parts book. Did the 1971 383-4 HP engine in a C body (Plymouth in this case) come with a single or dual snorkel air cleaner as stock?

The dealer brochure for Chrysler at least says in the chart on the second to last page that it has a single snorkel, but the drawing of the 383-4 HP engine shows dual. I am thinking it should be single snorkel in 1971 and dual in 1970.

Looks like dual

Saw a 69 E63 Newport today had the single snorkel in the untouched engine bay....

Thanks for the replies guys. My question is for 1971 only, and I was wondering Stan what your reference source is? I did find my 1971 Fury brochure, and here is a scanned copy of the engine options page below. I am asking because a friend of mine bought a 1971 Sport Fury with an E65 383-4 bbl HP engine and it came with a single snorkel and the owner said it was orginal. I would have bet it should be a dual snorkel, but now I am not so sure???

1971 383 and 440 4-Barrel. Has breather hose coming from left snorkel. There are two versions of the right snorkel design. Some of them have a straight line running diagonally and other have a hump in the line.

I would not be surprised if on a B body the dual snorkel was used on a 383-4 bbl engine. But the reference Nick's Garage says nothing about body applications.

Okay,.....a 71 Plymouth fury 383-4bbl HP would come ( IMO ) with dual exhaust pipes.... if there are dual pipes you often see the combo with dual snorkels.
I guess the same for dodges .

Normally I would agree, but the chart from the 1971 brochure above (you might have to magnify it) shows dual exhaust on the 71 383-4 bbl engine in a Fury, but a single snorkel air cleaner. And an original car, as I mentioned above, bears this out as well.

Unless you are restoring to original I wouldn't lose any sleep over it so install what you like. I like the look of dual myself.

Interesting question, I know they came dual snorkel on the 71 Dodge 383-4 but the Plymouth would only be a presumption on my part and could offer no proof. It is such an unusual engine combination under the hood of a C body you dont see enough of them
