NJ is like any other state, some areas are really nice and some aren't. I've been in both.
I get all kinds of nonsense when somebody sees New York plates on my car when I'm traveling. It's not as bad as it used to be, but there seems to be this idea that New York State is New York City. I had to explain to someone in northern Virginia once that they lived closer to NYC than I do. No clue. I live out in farm country. Literally across from a corn field.
