Ok, I am trying to figure out what the difference is between these two drive shafts. One is from my 68 Fury III 4 door, and the other if from my 68 Fury III 2 door fast top.
One is clearly smaller and longer than the other by 1/4 of an inch or so.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why?
Is one of my rear ends different?
I'll try to get pictures of both gearboxes for further reference.

Big Block/Small Block but I don't have enough data to say that definitively, that is the way it was on the three 69's I had.

They do sell a combo u-joint so you can use one with the other rear.

All you need to know is HERE.
Thanks. Helps a lot with technical details. But me being a drive train dummy am trying to do this build all myself by hand.
I would like to use the heavier duty shaft just to play it safe. Both cars had 383's so I'm unsure why the difference.
Bad thing is I have a feeling that the receivers will be different and I will be forced to use the smaller one.
Or, switch out the rear ends completely. Then I could use the larger one.
Once again, I'll get pictures of both today and see what I'm working with here. I'm not sure if either are sure grip or not.

Awesome, thanks Alan. That might alleviate a few problems.

742 large pinion nothing wrong with that. The 1/4" in length difference is not too much of a concern but worth double checking when installed. Either will be fine behind a 383

Thank you man with a hat.
I did a little research and unfortunately neither axles are sure grip. Boo hoo. I'll keep looking for one to put in it someday. For now it's going to have have to be the one wheel wonder!
I did however read in my 68 service bible that the 742 case can fit a sure grip and was an option for that rear end.
What I'm worried about is the difference in size of the u joints at either end of the shafts. I'll do my best to use the heaviest duty one I can since I'm running my new 727specialist trans in there.
Don't want to be leaving gears all over the road or worse, twizzler drive shaft haha!!!
