Finally my own '70 Sport Fury GT

Sounds like you might have caught the problem in time before any serious damage was done. When you say "refresh", is the plan to tear down the 440 and dip the block? Are you going back to factory specs?

B/RB engines oil the lifters before the crank, which explains the "ticks" heard.

We'll have to see what the budget looks like when the time comes to open it up. Probably just stock spec, good clean & reseal if nothing concerning is found. It wasnt burning any oil from what I could tell Maybe a small cam swap (I do have a 20 year old NOS .509 purple shaft kit sitting on the shelf LOL).

But part of me also just wants to tuck the original drivetrain in the corner of the garage and build another 440 block I have laying around into a stroker with some max ported iron heads, a 6bbl setup & have fun running a F.A.S.T. class boat.

This picture of Daves 6bbl GT launching at the track just drives me wild.

Found lots of nasty sludge/carbon buildup in the valley when I popped the manifold tray off. But its what I expected to find.

Broke the torch out to remove the water pump fittings. The hose barbs were pitted bad and very tough to get the heater hoses to seal with the factory style clamps.

Pulled the heads to check the cylinders. Looks like a 95k mile engine inside. Almost no trace of the factory cross hatching and there is a slight ridge at the top of the bores.
