Indy 500 magnesium wheel fire

Did anyone see the magnesium wheel fire during the Indy 500?
All I can think of is that the brakes got so hot, the magnesium ignited...

Which was not the only situation which slowed the completion of the race. Looked good from what I saw, just missed the linked situation.

Glad the race happened, even with the side issues involved.

When Mopar Nats was near Indy for a few years in the 1990s, I always went to the Indy 500 Museum to see what was there. LOTS of interesting cars on display, plus other things related to the Indy 500 race's history. One year, the plane's flight plan had us circle the track from above. Many nice memories from those times! A neat place!

Yes it was crazy it exploded, i think it stemmed from a brake lockup

Can’t see it because service sucks out here in Death Valley but I’ll bet it was as crazy as the old mag engine blocks we’d burn at out the desert parties. Man those things really take off once they get going. I’ll be sure to check out your link. Thanks for posting it !
