Hi everyone. I have a 1 owner 1966 sport fury 318 2bbl 2 door hardtop with only 68000 miles. This is a special car to me. The first owner was my Dad and he bought it new in 1966. His first new car. Almost everything is original except for the paint rims tires and wear parts like brakes. My mom said the only reason it was painted is because Dad waxed the paint off it. Now Dad told me he always kicked himself for not buying the 383 car right beside this one. I am wondering what I can do without wrecking the originality to add a few more horses? My Dad also had a 69 Hemi 4sp numbers matching yellow super Bee. I think he said 14 built that year. So I am a die hard Mopar man. He told me that the s fury (that's also the license plate) was a Windsor, ON build. I guess there were 2 different factories? Any advice from people more knowledgeable than me will be much appreciated.

Also there are 2 Springs either side of the driver's seat that are trying to poke their way out. Suggestions?

Nice! Looks to be in wonderful shape, outstanding interior! I would just freshen everything up and drive the crap out of it! The color is quite different but looks to be well done. Lucky you to receive such an awesome gift from your dad. By any chance is the Super Bee relaxing in the barn, or? CG

Last I heard the Bee was in a museum in Pittsburg. It spent its life in the drag strip so the interior was mint never used. My Dad had the Hemi built one winter and when we went to get the car out of our barn in the spring the big hole where the steering column should have been looked inviting to a family of racoons... My Dad was so sick and mad at himself the car was sold the next day...

And I do drive the sh!+ out of her. 4 lane to the cottage about a 200 mile drive. Takes just over 2 hrs when I do it at night. I think he said 2.73 rear end. Correct me if that would be wrong. But it will bury the 110 mph speedo. Dad said he could keep the taillights of most hemi cars in sight at least. Lol. Did they sit more level when new? I have dropped the front tortion bars a couple times but it always look bum heavy.

engine options are limited with 318 2-BB:.
You could change to aluminum manifold and add a 600 cfm 4-bbl. Dual exhaust would help. Hughes engines can provide you a better cam/more torque & steeper ramps. Different pistons could bring the compression up to 9:1.

I do have a 1969 440 and matching 727. Came out of my buddies 70 challenger when he found a 440 6 pack with matching date code. His plate is 6pack2go. Lol. I have been reading and it seems like quite an endeavour to swap the 440. Could the 318 handle a shot of laughing gas now and again? Be so nice to be able to replace tires a bit more frequently.. I do have dual exhaust 2" on her now. Or could it handle a couple hair dryers hidden underneath. 6-8 lbs boost maybe? I am sure even an intake and 4bbl would be nice. The black engine bay bugs me though so it is an excuse to put the 318 on a skid for awhile. I like the gold color. I think it is a 78 gm color.

What color was it originally?

It was a light slight metallic green/yellow. Not sure the name. I am going to take it for a cruise this weekend and the original bill of sale is in the center console and it should say there. I will take a picture of it.

1969 440: The stub frame is the same for V8 small blocks and big blocks. Someone here could sell you big block motor mounts. You'll need a big block kickdown linkage. Bouchillon Performance can help with pulleys and brackets. I converted my 1970 Fury convertible 318 to 1969 440. Definitely a doable job. And well worth the effort!

That 318 poly would require a strong rebuild to handle nitrous oxide or supercharging. Also. the engine has a short stroke, which could limit the effectiveness of either. OTOH, it might be fun to hook up nitrous and see how long it takes for the engine to crap out...provided the process does not damage the rest of your vehicle.

Anyone know if these heads fit a stock 69 440 block? P5249824 and P5007494. Is xray the only way I can be sure no cracks? I can get them both for $1000 CAD so that's what $50 USD. Lol. It a friend of a friend etc thing so I don't know the guy. And do they change the height as I won't ever cut a hole in this car. I remember an engine masters that they did the max wedge heads and the 440 actually wants to breath even deeper then they allow. And I assume cam, rods lifters etc the whole deal would need to be replaced to use them? I will look for the engine masters episode when the better half goes to bed.

And if I had to get an intake I would probably go fuel injection. I know it is a DSM but it says Plymouth on it and I have over 500 whp from 2.0L at 21psi stock internals without the 75 shot. The 75 shot is more for getting the old school hairdryer to spool fast. It is a 1991 so has the small disc brakes so I have some serious slicks for the front. She can do 10.37 1/4 and get better part of 30mpg on the highway with great daily driver manners. V8 guys (which I am) cringe when the see what that 4g63 head will flow stock. Best 4 cylinder engine ever made. My sons and I are almost done a 1993 awd talon. We just put 4 drag radialson it. She is gonna launch that's what I can't do with the fwd. And the talon is gutted etc just a straight line fun cheap toy. See the red demon... 6 second 1/4 at 215mph stick shift 4g63 4 cylinder. Fastest in the world... They are fun.. Sorry I am way off topic. Just love the mopar. I used to have a GTH-S.. Goes Like Hell Some more. Wish I kept her.

After reading through this thread, you've stated something in the first few sentences that you need to give a little more thought to.

Cars are only original once. You've got something that a lot of guys would kill for... A fairly low mileage, original car, with known history. Topping it off, it's your Dad's car.

All the dreams of turbos and spray are nice, but geez... These cars are really built as cruisers. The 318 Poly is a pretty stout motor as it sits. You talk about driving 200 miles with it.. That 318 is going to be really nice for that. Looking at gas prices too and it may make more sense to keep this stock or very mild.

It's your car... and yours to do what you want with.. A 440 swap makes more sense than any of the other options. I'd just like to make an argument to leave it alone and enjoy it as it is. Cars with lots of "go fast" mods are cool, but honestly, they stay in the garage a lot because they often don't drive as well... or they need more maintenance.. and on and on. You've got a nice car that your Dad loved, think about leaving it like it is and just have some fun.

That car is beautiful. Does something like this help? Can't say I understand much of it but I'm a big fan of Roadkill and Freiburger/Finnegan/Dulcich. I'm sure they've forgotten more than I'll ever know but it's nice that even they screw up too.

That being said I'm loving my 318. I have a lot of a-holes tailgating me when I'm only doing 5 over but I know it's just because they're jealous. :) MPG is at least as good or better than my Silverado.

If you are going to do anything, I would find a 4 bbl intake, TTI exhaust with turn down tips. A distributor recurve, good tune up. Then I would concentrate on the suspension, bigger front torsion bars and front sway bar.
I always swap in factory larger disc brakes, but that can wait if you are in a rural environment.
Then only if the engine is in need of a build, I would look into a stroker kit for your Poly, 392 cid with a smooth cam will get great torque and drivability and still look stock.

I don't remember seeing a stroker kit for a poly, but that doesn't mean much... I never looked for one either LOL.

One of the car mags did a build on one a few years ago. These are really good motors with decent heads. The factory dual quad setup is available with a little looking, but I'm sure it could be duplicated without too much drama. I think Chrysler even offered a 290 horse version in their '58 Fury.

Honestly, next to the Hemi, IMHO, you can't beat the visual looks of the poly. Kind of up there with the 348/409 Chevy.

Wrong 318.

Regarding stroker poly
You install a stroked LA 360 crank, and overbore the **** out of it.
If memory serves it gets 426 cubic inch.
With the poly heads it's supposed to be dynomite and will ambarass lots of big blocks.
It's one of the things on my bucket list
