Ever wonder how your car was advertised? Or what the prices were way back when? If you find yourself with some spare time, go to https://news.google.com/newspapers and look up your local newspaper. Google has tens of thousands of scans of old newspapers you can look through. The Sunday editions usually have the best automotive advertisements.

Be careful though... this activity can become addictive. :)

On 1 Jan 1960 in the Deseret News, (SLC, UT), there is a 1951 Hudson Hornet sedan offered for $98.00 and a '53 MG for $948.00 through the same used car dealer. New AllState tires from $19.50 each.

Remember these rates??

I believe Kramer became Varsity on 16th ave as it had moved to 19th street across from the old Highlander Hotel(great prime rib in its day). Lorne Kramer and Jack Thompson (old Renfrew Chrysler Salesman) formed Kramer Mazda which is still around today. Varsity was bought and sold by Bill Appleby and is now at its current location just off Edmonton trail while Bill Appleby owns Crowfoot Dodge now.

Thanks. I knew about the Varsity sale, move and Crowfoot swap. Also, by name, I assumed that it was the same Kramer. So then, did the old location of Kramer Chrysler become the Mazda store on McLeod? Interesting to see the changes in the dealership locations and the dealership shuffles. A few more I remember are Universal (Ford) moving to the NE and Renfrew (Plymouth) moving from 9th into that space. Then Stampede (Pontiac) moving into the Renfrew space. The only dealers still in the same place since I moved here in '79 are Eastside and Big4, and CMP.

Not sure about the Kramer bldg on Macleod but Cochrane Dodge is the old Stampede Pontiac bunch. When GM shut them down they (Ulmer Auto Group) bought the store from the nervous PO who thought Chrysler was finished in 2009. Jokes on him as we are now in a brand new $13M store and have tripled sales in 3 years! Renfrew has to move soon - the land and buildings are owned by the city and looks like the West Village development will go through. Big 4 is stuck where they are as no store will approve them moving into a new trade zone. Eastside has a sister store being built in the deep south end of the city called South Trail
