Odd fueling issue...

Making the most of the end of the summer here in the UK, I've been driving the Sport Fury wherever possible - and a weird fueling issue has manifested itself.

Stock as a rock 383 with original 2bbl that has been running great until last weekend. Drove around an hour at all kinds of speeds, parked up and went back to her after about another hour. 10 mins into the return journey she just cut out on me, Luckily I managed to coast to safety. Wouldn't fire off at all until she'd cooled down for half an hour or so.

The rest of the journey home she was running a little rough, but we got there. Parked up.. did some other stuff, then went back to her and she fired right off no problems. 2 minutes later, same problem!

A couple of days later, started fine from cold & revved beautifully and cleanly. But once we got up to temperature she did it again :(

So... my thinking is ignition or carb. Haven't put a timing gun on it yet, but there's electronic ignition in the distributor, so while I'm not ruling it out entirely - it does seem the least likely of the two.

Anyone ever had similar? Tomorrow night I plan on seeing if the carb is getting fuel or not. If it is, I'm kind of stumped...
 
I had exactly the same and it was the condenser. I had 2 bad made in China condensers, put the old one back on no problems 1 year later and about 2000 miles.

Sorry just read you had electronic ignition, but it does sound like an ignition issue. I changed the fusible link, when it did this the first time, seems like a good place to start.

When the car quits check and see what's missing spark or fuel. After you know for sure what's missing than you can troubleshoot it. Check for spark at the coil wire at dist cap and at spark plug. Look down the carb and work the throttle looking for fuel from the accelerator pump. Come back with further questions if you need more help. Good luck
 
Ensure fuel line is clear of heat sources....gas will perculate giving you fuel filter type symptoms once fuel warms up and perculates...is a easy check and fix....just on the off chance you have a fuel line sittin on a manifold ect
 
The coil is mounted on the inlet manifold, which I'm not a fan of & will relocate.

Bizarrely when she quit on me the second time, I had the air filter off to check the carb & it was spraying fine... For a little while, then nothing at all?!
 
Only pump the carb once or twice to check for fuel any more and you will start to flood the engine, if you do keep pumping you will run the float bowl dry.
 
Soooo... replaced a couple of gnarly looking soft lines tonight (I sell marine grade stuff for a living) and the vintage looking plastic fuel filter that I'm not a fan of!

Cranking her, and the filter stayed completely dry? Opened up some of the hoses and long story short, nothing carb side of the fuel pump. So I guess that's my culprit unless I'm missing something?!

The symptoms seem odd for a failing fuel pump, especially as it looks pretty new.
 
Could possibly be the fuel pump push rod - happened to me once and was a pain to diagnose. Also if the engine has been rebuilt a few years ago there was a batch of bad (soft) push rods out and lots of folks had issues. My failed rod was original, but the engine had over 300K at the time so lots of miles to wear it out.

Interesting, cheers - since the bits are cheap I'll get a pump and the pushrod (list gets longer!)

Had the same thing last weekend on the '66. No fuel getting to carb from fuel pump. Heard a gawd awful racket a couple days before thought it was fuel pump rod. Grabbed a new pump on a Sunday from AV removed the old pump and rod. Rod measured 3.22 " so it was good new pump went in and now have fuel to carb. Got lucky IMHO
 
i dunno what hoses u changed, but there is a rubber hose in the frame rail possibly, and also at the tank that connect to the metal lines - just sayin - those will be gnarly also. be sure to put the grounding strap back on at the tank inlet if u R&R..

the pump will cavitate and will suck in the hose like pinch it if the rubber is too old/soft/wore out.

New fuel pump arrived in the week, fitted it this afternoon - what an unbelievably fiddly PITA job! Anyway, I now get fuel the other side of it :)

Got to replace a hose tail, which I assume is NPT? Shall raid work tomorrow:)

It's not BSP or NPT... Can't imagine it's metric!

Luckily we have a hose and hydraulics place next door to work :D
 
Some have 5/16 inverted flare.
