Spotted something interesting

On the way home the other day I spotted a shiney new City of Raleigh patroll car sitting in an empty parking lot. What caught my eye was that it was a new Dodge Charger. Blue & white with black wheels. Darn thing looked sinister! Raleigh has not used mopar cop cars since the early 70's. They have been using Crown Vics for decades. And Caprice's before that. I hope this was not just a one off they are testing. It would be cool to see Mopar cop cars in Raleigh again. The Sheriff & State Patrol switched to Chargers several years ago. Its time for Raleigh to step up. In 5 years or so they will start showing up at the public auctions. Wondering if Ford lost the contract?

Yea I know the Vic is no more. I thought Ford was pushing the Taurus hard now? Seen a few Taurus's somewhere in my travels.

The CHP out here will be going in another direction and many others tend to duplicate what the CHP does.

The SUV is a bit more expensive than the Charger..... Many local towns keep SUVs in their fleets but cost,fuel economy and agility makes it impractical to only buy those.
The Charger V6 is the way to go

They also have a few Tahoe's. Had those for a few years now. Anyhow I was a wee lad the last time there was Plymouth Fury's patroling around here. 40 years later maybe we have come full circle.

Are you not counting the Diplomat lookin Fury's of the 80s? Or are you that young?

The Staties here use everything, pick ups , SUVs full size cars and mid size cars....they still have a large fleet of Crowns.

Not in the midwest......mostly Fords here....the AWD is standard and they designed the inside cages to fix exactly from the old C.V's. If money is tight for a agency then that is something to think about. And, the Ford SUV is 2k more. Those who think the car is small are picking the SUV. The extra money they feel will come back as higher resale. If weather is ever an issue the AWD as standard is a definate advantage.

The OKC PD bought over 80 Crown Vics in their last build year and have them stored away for later use. They bring about 15-20 out easch year to replace wrecked and sold cars. They've gone to the new Ford Police Interceptor (modded Taurus) and the Charger, but still have a lot of the Crown Vics.

A neighbor has a solid black 2005 CV cop unit that has just 55K miles on it. It has the normal rear seat, no holes in the car other than the ones for the spotlights, and the dash had a radio. Very straight and uncut car. He has some 20" custom black chrome wheels on it that really make it look sinister!

There's a Road and Track article where they test drive one and list the specs as 370 HP with the 5.7. I don't know if these will be, but I remember Police Interceptor Crown Vics going for cheap prices once they retired for duty. If these go the same, a no frills Charger with Hemi V8 could be maybe had in the same cheap fashion.

Around here, all the Chargers are SRTs, so they rock the BIG Hemis. The ones that impress me the most being a Chevy guy is the 14 Caprices. I have a '14 SS sedan that is bad to the bone. Runds 12.80s bone stock. The Caprices are cop only, the cabbies cant even get them.

Same platform as my SS but very different. The cop car is as stripped as they get. Rubber mats, no tech (my wifes SS parks itself while it cools your ***), 6.0 instead of my 6.2. But still a rear wheel drive sedan that hauls *** and bad guys.

My ride of choice? An 09 Tahoe. Tuned, exhaust, lowered, cop rims, cop push bar, spot lights. I get to drive as fast as I need with no tickets.

Guess that depends on urban, suburban, rural, or desert highway......... Local towns go for the six.... For fuel and initial

Yes thats kinda why I'm excited about this. In a few years they will filter into the the area from the auctions & salvage yards. May be able to get a deal on a speced out 5.7.

Yeah, I've seen Crown Vic police interceptors going for $4500-$6000 based on mileage (most of them 50k -80k) but built to last forever. It would be cool to fetch a late model, low mileage retired police Charger with the 5.7L Hemi rocking 370 hp if they ended up with similar prices. That'd be a lot of car for a little price! Too bad the Crown Vic police cars were slow (270 hp but very heavy).

We'll have to see. Would be nice to get one at that price. From what I have been told the HP Chargers are fetching more than that at local public auctions.
