The beginning of a new life and a new build!

the top of the tank will be a few inches above the trunk floor, I was going to sing your praises if the tank fit under what looked to be a "hatch". but I guess you are ok with the top of the tank being raised.

Really don't know how you can possibly fill it from the side, You cant have the rubber seals under the fuel level they will deteriorate and leak, I think you will have to make a false floor in the trunk.

Maybe something like this?

The other thing I was thinking about and scares me a bit.
You don't want fuel pouring into the car. That would not be a good day. Are you planning on putting in some type of bulkhead in the truck in the event the car is struck from the rear?

Well look at the factory tanks! That is exactly how they are. The seal is below the midway point in the tank and at the back. It looks like I could do the exact same thing with this one but I am going to look at it again and figure out what I want to do.

I have thought about this. I am not 100% sure how I want to finish the tank out. As far as protecting the tank and the bulk head I actually think its safer than the factory set up was but I will likely be building a bulk head any how so you can't see the back seat or the speaker area and I can use that for "long term" storage for battery cables and what not kind of stuff. Where did you find that set up?

To be honest I think you would have been better off going with a nice fuel cell.

Hello BJS Racing,

I am late to this post, but I am brand new to the site. :)

My husband and I are proud owners of a 65 Plymouth Sport Fury (318 poly). We love her! Everyone on this forum is so smart, so I am sure you already know this. However, I will put it out there anyway.

If you come across parts, even if you do not need them right now, BUY THEM! Findings parts for the '65 SF is dificult to say the least. We recently had our transmission go out (727 TorqueFlite) and it turned out to be a cracked valve body. 1965 was an off year where they changed things and then changed back in 1966, so finding a part that would fit a 1965 727 Torque Flite was quite interesting. We finally found one on ebay and were fortunate that it was in great shape and plugged right in, but prior to that our transmission person had his hands on a '64 and '66 and the holes did not match up.

Also, we needed a new shifter cable. A new shifter cable on a 2012 Hyundai $35, for a 1965 Plymouth SF $200 as it had to be custom made. Go figure!

Also, the rear drums are hard to come by, if you have to replace, they are an off size.

They are GREAT cars and once she is done, if you ever show her, chances are you will be the only 1965 SF there. We always are at our shows. Ours rides like a dream and even the air nozzle in the trunk to "pump up" the factory rear airbags/shocks to raise the rear end still works.

Also, it looks like in your picture you are missing the chrome bezels around your reverse lights (not sure if they are just off) but we found one on ebay and if I remember correctly, there were a few more for sale.

Good luck with your project! They are great looking cars when they are done! I have attached a few photos of our '65.

Thanks!

Katy, thanks for the info. I know these cars have some odd ball parts that are year specific. My wife and I are of the same mind to buy what ever parts we can on the in case! We are planning on keeping this car til the world stops turning and then still holding on to it for a couple more days! LOL. I am actually looking for a couple of parts right now. The trim around the headlight buckets and the cowl vent between the front glass and the hood. They were missing on my car. The only other thing that I "really" need is the panel for the rear package/speaker cover behind the back seat and the back glass. The brakes are all going to end up getting changed to Aerospace disc brakes and I am looking at possibly changing the shifter to an aftermarket but haven't made up my mind yet. Mine won't stay "stock" but I am not going to get wild with it either. Thanks for the info and hope to see more of your car!

I hear you, we will be keeping our cars forever. Still have not figured out how we will take all 3 to shows, but I am sure I can find someone to help us drive them. :)

I did a quick search on ebay and there are a few parts you may be interested in, but the sellers are proud of them let me tell you.

Good luck in your search and let me know if you need any help finding something or photos of how it "should" be. We may be able to help you out!

Thanks!
KG

I sure will! I will take it tomorrow as tonight we will be home late since we are finally picking up our '67 VIP. :yaayy:

Well here are a couple of pics if what I found when I pulled the water pump housing off and 66 here is a pic of the trunk seal. This is the drivers side looking at it from the back of the car. Guess I need a new one too!

Thank you. Looks like the one I ordered is not correct. They said it was, maybe just a different design,..I hope!!

Wow with any luck that won't be to far back and will flush out. Male end of a garden hose against that lower hole and see what comes out

I know Steele Rubber sells the correct seal. I am actually going to be giving them a call after I get it all back together and running. They offer most all of the seals for our cars. I have parts at the powder coater and also have a couple of boxes on their way with all kinds of fun parts that will all be here in time for me to have a fun, sweaty, and productive weekend!:yaayy:

Yeah that's the one I ordered, but don't look like yours!? Maybe yours is just flattened out over the years.

Actually what you got will probably work better. Yours is solid. I will likely last the test of time better then the original stuff. Would you post a pic of the under hood of your car in this thread please?:yourock: I kinda would like to see a little side by side while I am trying to catch up to you! :occasion14: Oh and let me know how that works for you so I know when I order mine!

Sure thing! I will let you know when I get it installed and post some pictures. Here is also a video when I meet the PO and saw the car for the first time the day I bought it. First time it was started in over a year. It's come a long way since then!

That's not what's in the car now, this is from SSBC. Dual diaphragm with a Corvette master and I'm running an electric vacuum pump. No vac from the motor.
