Hey guys, got this air cleaner with my 71 sport fury 383 4BBl but not sure if it’s original ( I doubt it actually) . And what’s that big hole next to the snorkel for ? Kinda figuring out if I want to/ can use it with my rebuilt engine . If somebody got an original used one for sale let me know please . don’t actually know either if it should be dual snorkel ?! Any help is much appreciated!
That probably should be a dual snorkel unit for a '71 383 with 4BBL. Some of the A-Bodies had those oval cutouts with the fresh air hood. See: Nick's Garage - Air Cleaner Identification Dave
An interesting item, for sure, with a non-flap snorkel and the open slot directly beside it. The air filter element part number looks like a 1968 part number, but I believe that the filter elements with the foam wrapper would only be on a CA emissions vehicle. As the snorkel is a non-flap snorkel, it would have to fit on something that was exempt from emissions testing, as in a HD 3/4 ton or 1 ton vehicle. Probably '70-71 vintage small block? Yet the tag looks more like something from the middle 1970s or later. Just some thoughts, CBODY67
Nope... the LB holes were squared off and always to the right of the snorkel, and the snorkel always had a round end for the hose. This one looks like a home made hole.
Thanks for your opinions guys..... guess I have to start to look for a dual snorkel that was original..... Any guesses where it’s the best to look for one ? Feels like more than pain in the ass to find one these days right ?!
I’d just run the one you have and keep an eye out for double snorkel for sale. They do pop up for sale right here. Be ready to jump fast. They do look cool!
Actually found this one on eBay . It says 383 super commando (and the seller names my car where it was original) but actually I am not sure if I have a 383 super commando?! Can anybody confirm that because I didn’t find a 100% writing that prooves it . Got a 71 Sport fury 383 HP 4BBL but never heard of it as super commando ?! But if it’s true....wow that would be cool !!! Somebody got the answer ?
I think super commando was a Chrysler designation but that’s just a replaceable pie tin. The one on my N-code ‘71 Challenger says Magnum.
Super Commando was Plymouth's version of a big block w/ 4 bbl carb. Commando V8 is what they called the big block 2bbl.
For a few dollars less (not mine)- Dual Snorkel Air Cleaner Dodge - auto parts - by owner - vehicle... Appears to be a '70 but only the most critical would ever notice.
Morning guys and thanks for the replies ! I am actually pretty happy that my engine is called super Commando even although I know it’s just words.... for me it counts to know . Now I just have to find a dual snorkel . If not I probably stick to the Mopar performance cleaner that’s fits to my valve covers but for now I want to find one . PH2717 your Link doesn’t work....
The high performance engines were designated Plymouth -> Super Commando Chrysler -> TNT Dodge -> Magnum Just as the E87 option for the 440cui with 3 dual carburators was called Plymouth -> 6 bbl Dodge -> Six Pack not available on Chrysler models
Believe Plymouth 273's only got the commando designation, no super. 273 2 barrel had no special ID other than a V8 on the fender. Survivor 66 cuda-
