Watched review of NIO's new Firefly model (Bjorn Nyland I think) on you tube. Car had a rectangular steering wheel like the early 60's Chryslers. What are the advantages of a rectangular steering wheel and why did it get phased out? Paul

The rectangular steering wheel was distinctive AND allowed for more leg distance between the steering wheel and the seat cushion. In an age of non-tilt steering columns and not everything having power seats.

Some aftermarket and racing car steering wheels have adopted the flat bottom section, but with a round upper section. Probably for better leg clearance getting into those cramped driver's seat environments.
